Can you help me with sheets?

Asked by smudges (11646points) 3 days ago

I want polyester shallow-fit queen sheet sets. I just bought 100% cotton and hate them. It’s such a struggle to turn over during the night, which I do frequently. I looked at the fabric content of the last sheets I had which I loved because they were silky and slippery but not like satin or silk slippery. They were 100% polyester made in China. Yes, they were probably cheap but I’m not a sheet snob; I just want something I can move easily on. I’ve been searching but am exhausted and brain dead there’s so many to look through! I even looked at a Parkinson’s site about turning over.

Would tencel do it? In any case try Target online for a selection. Most of them are cotton but cotton jersey might work for you?

It says that there’s elastic all around the fitted sheet. Would that solve the problem of it being too deep? My mattress is just 8”.

“Patented fit technology stays in place and fits mattresses up to 18”
“Fitted sheet includes full perimeter elastic to stay secure to your mattress”

Sounds promising. Also checked out another one sateen 400 thread elastic all around. That elastic all around has me curious as to whether it’ll keep the fitted sheet at least somewhat snug. Mine currently is very loose.

Cotton percale is likely a good choice for you.

@smudges Could still be kind of loose. You could get those suspender like clips if necessary to make it tighter.

If your bed could do with more softness, a foam topper could help with that plus the deep pocket bottom sheets.

What about the old fashioned way two flat sheets?

If you can find a good sale, I recommend bamboo sheets, but make sure you get the ones that are 100% bamboo and not some sort of hybrid. I will never go back from my bamboo sheets!

Sheets are so important in life. I am not sure I can help you because I am not a fan of polyester. So for those reasons, I am out.

I don’t know if I“ve seen polyester sheets but they sometimes refer to a “blend” which is a blend of poly/cotton.

You might do two king side flat sheets and for the bottom sheet, just fold it under the mattress. Most sheets are made deep now, because many new mattresses are deep. I’ve never seen shallow sheets.

Some hotels do the flat sheet, folded under method.

Had an idea this morning. Maybe camping stores would have sheets for shallower mattresses in RVs?

I found shallow sheets that fit 6–10” yayyy! I’m reading “Percale vs sateen” and so far am leaning toward sateen. I wondered about bamboo and will check into it, also.

I can’t do two flat sheets; I can barely change the sheets now; took me 30 mins the other day and that’s with 4–5 breaks. My lower back has severe arthritis. I can’t lift the matress long enough to put those corner thingies on, but I saw some with them built in. I have a direction to look into now. Thanks jellies!!

Sheets…who knew they were so varied and complex!

My bed is against the wall and it’s a real chore for me to change the sheets. I have a platform bed and the mattress is not sitting on an actual platform, the platform is indented into the frame, about four inches, so the mattress has to be lifted up and out to change the sheets. I use my daughter’s help (she’s a teen) but even then, it’s a chore.

@jca2 – if you kneel on the bed with your head towards the wall you can use both hands to pull the mattress up to tuck the sheets in on the wall side. Your head will get pushed against the wall but you can use a pillow to cushion. That’s what I do when I change sheets on our guest beds, which are against the wall.

Even king sheets will not tuck in at both top and bottom. Sheets aren’t made as large as they were when I was young. When I was a kid there were full and twin beds in the house and the sheets were all flat and easily tucked in all four sides easily. That was then, not now.

Be sure to stay away from microfiber.

smudges's avatar

^^ That’s the impression I got, too!

Did you guys know that sateen and percale are how the threads are put together, not an actual fabric? I didn’t.

kruger_d's avatar

You will prefer sateen to percale for movement.

^^ Thanks for stopping by. That’s what I was thinking but haven’t actually shopped yet. Have a couple of bookmarks.

@smudges – interesting about the weaves. In the carbon fiber composites business we call them plain weave vs 4-harness satin weave.
