What mental collapse?

Asked by Jeruba (56275points) 1 day ago

Lord knows I’m no Trump fan, but I have to ask—what sudden mental collapse, cognitive decline, or dive into senility did it mean when he said “94% of the cars in Japan are made in Japan.”?

Without disputing the statistical accuracy of the statement, I’m just wondering what’s wrong with it logically. Doesn’t it just mean that only 6% of the cars driven in Japan were manufactured abroad? and all the rest made at home? How does that comment signify a deranged meltdown?

It’s probably the accumulation of past comments that have people worried.

I don’t have the app, but I’ve seen the screenshots of his rants. Very typical of old people to use all capital letters (you would be moderated on this website for typing like that) and create long strings of texts ranting about anything and everything.

There are many examples over the years, too many to even catalog and type here.

Genuinely not sure if you knew that.

And there’s nothing wrong with becoming senile, but people are just pointing it out, because it was a huge talking point against Biden.

Dementia meltdown, soon he might be physically fighting people at Press Conferences including Fox News . . . He has totally lost it ! !

Thanks, but please read my question again. I’m asking about this specific remark, which he made a few days ago and which has been labeled as I stated by a number of commentators.

I’m not asking whether he’s lost it—I’m asking why the quoted statement means he’s lost it. Why are they calling it a sign of senility and a full-scale meltdown? I don’t see what’s wrong with it.

@Jeruba
Because they don’t like him….I thought that was obvious.
When people don’t like someone, they find a reason to get them tied up in the legal system.

Similar to how jaywalking was a reason to go after african americans that actually followed the law and haven’t actually done anything wrong.

Similar to how Al Capone got away with murder…but was jailed for tax evasion.

Trump’s figures are probably correct. Japan has a very strong car production industry and doesnt import many cars. The figure might be as low as 4% of cars are imports,
It is very out of character for Trump to introduce a verifiable truth into one of his rants and I can see why commentators are struggling to explain it. It is as if the broken clock on your mantelpiece suddenly appeared to be showing the correct time.
It is inconceivable that Trump would have checked this figure for accuracy and he probably threw the numbers out there knowing it didnt matter whether they were true or false.
Were a reliance on truthfulness to become part of Trump’s campaigning then there would obviousy be grounds for concern and referral to a brain specialist would be advisable

I’d want to see a fuller quote to determine the context that they are reacting to.

That specific example doesn’t really mean much in my opinion.
I’d agree with blackberry, it’s probably everything combined. But even so, it is a statement that makes total sense. He is saying that the vast majority of the cars that are currently in Japan, were made there. Not sure why that is so confusing to people. It’s not like he is saying “94% of Japanese cars are made in Japan”

Either way, seems nitpicky.

I still want to see a citation so I can assess it myself.

Had to research a bit myself;

AI overview:

“No, not all cars sold in Japan are made in Japan, and it’s not 94%. While a large portion of cars sold in Japan are domestically produced, a significant number are also imported. The precise percentage varies, but it’s not as high as 94%.”

It’s probably closer to 80%. Their cars are more compact and have smaller engines. Car culture there is just different. While Trump probably pulled that 94% figure out of his ass, the general premise is more or less correct. I don’t understand why this is a reason to believe he has had a deranged meltdown.

^^ From what I read, it was more his behavior at the presentation. He wandered off the stage and had to be directed to go back to sign the order.

@janbb
Yes, which is why it’s important to provide all the details. There’s nothing wrong with the quote, as it’s a basic lie that we’re all used to and is expected.

I do not know the statement or the stat.
That said, even Europe doesn’t import many US cars primarily due to a combination of factors, including larger vehicle sizes that don’t fit well into European streets and parking, different regulatory standards, and consumer preferences. Additionally, higher fuel prices and emissions standards in Europe make US vehicles less competitive.
The same holds true for Japan.
