Have I been drinking old wine this whole time?

Asked by Blackberry (34474points) 16 hours ago

Many times when I’ve had cheap wine, it had a really bad after taste. There used to be an old saying that expired or old wine would taste like vinegar.

And there have been many times a wine I drank tasted very bitter and sour.

But occasionally when I spend a bit more, or get wine from a good restaurant, the wine tastes perfect: silky and smooth and fruity or earthy etc.

Wine isn’t supposed to taste bitter and sour, right?

Yeah, good wine can be a delightful experience.

But sour and bitter wine isn’t necessarily old or spoiled. How a wine tastes has a lot to do with the variety of grape, its growing conditions, its age (some wines improve with age) and other factors, which the best vineyards have developed over many years. Lots of wine is made and sold that is sour and/or has other problems at any age. And different people have different tastes in wine.

It could be bad, old wine or as @Zaku says just not to your taste but if there is a sour aftertaste and you like good wine, it is probably bad cheap wine.

It could be bad or just a poor quality wine. Yes, most should taste smooth and silky, but some varieties do have a bit of a bite. They however will not taste like vinegar.
