How would you combine an office and a closet?

Asked by JLeslie (65993points) 4 hours ago

I’m planning to use a bedroom in my house as a combination closet, office, and crafting room, because the closet in the master is ridiculously small. I rarely work at my desk, but I have a lot of office supplies and files.

About 6 drawers of files and 5’X8’ of supplies and books, and needing space for my printer too. I do very little crafting, it is more wrapping paper, some regifts, fabric, and a sewing machine that usually in its box.

Would you have the clothes hanging for all to see or closed cabinetry? If money was no object, what do you think you would do? Money is an object though, I am not going to spend $10,000 on a dressing room that looks like an expensive boutique.

I thought about getting an adjustable height table that I can use as a desk or folding table. Or, maybe just a small desk for work stuff and the folding area be like a dresser with drawers for storage.

The room is 11X13 feet more or less. There is a typical wall closet in the room, I think it is 5 feet wide. I could maybe use the existing closet for the office supplies, or try to get most of my clothing in there, or use it for all of the crafting stuff.

What do you think would be the most functional or the best looking or hopefully both. I really can’t decide what I want where. Looking for fun and useful ideas.

Depends on how much of a closet you need and the layout of the room. Where is the door? I would want to make the closet from floor to ceiling to use the top for storage. Also, do you need the room as a guest room? If I can I would also build a pocket door for entrance to the room, so I can still use the space against the wall without worrying if the door is going to hit something or use up valuable space. Build shelves on the walls to store computer stuff and make the desk work for a computer and sewing stuff. Get an easy hideaway bed for guests
Something like this would be great for the computer slash sewing table. And a murphy bed for the guest.

Try a closet organizer. Tell them your ideas, and they will come up with creative solutions for you, for a lot of it, anyway.

Could you find a program that lets you design a room by moving things around to see how they fit and look?

@Pandora It has a regular swing door, I won’t be changing it to a pocket door. A pocket door would not change it much, since I still need room to walk into the room. Any shelving where the door currently is when ajar would block walking into the room. I do love pocket doors though, it just isn’t an option to consider in this room.

Here is the floor plan: https://www.thevillages.com/home-series/swallow-designer?style=Concrete My house is stretched a little, but bedroom 4 stays the same and that is the room in question.
