What species of animal is this?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) September 28th, 2008

I’m too lazy to look through hundreds of photos in a zoology book. Does anyone know what this animal is called?

Thanks for the ID help!

An Impala looks LIKE THIS!

I don’t know what everyone is talking about. They just look like birds to me.

I wanted to know, because I did NOT know.

Mugsie's avatar

Oh ~ I was just curious!

Les's avatar

I’m confused. Why was fireside right, and everyone who said ‘impala’ before, not right?

FiRE_MaN's avatar

hahaha this made me laugh. i thought it was an antelope at first but i really do not know to much about those lookin animals. xD

fireside's avatar

@Les – it probably had something to do with the Latin…..

JackAdams's avatar

Fireside was right, because the NGS photo was almost identical to the one I posted, and was correctly labeled by them.

Mtl_zack's avatar

@fireman: there are many different species in the antelope group. impala, kudu, blesbok, steenbok and carribou are all antelope. im 100% sure that that’s an impala. fireside’s picture is an impala.

while we’re on the topic of antelope, a little trivia: what’s the difference between a carribou and a raindeer. lurve to the person who gets it first.

fireside's avatar

Domestication

Although the similarities between reindeer and caribou are numerous, the differences are enough that they are classified as two subspecies. Reindeer and caribou share the same genus, Rangifer, and species name, tarandus. Domestication is the biggest difference between reindeer and caribou. Reindeer are a semidomesticated subspecies of Rangifer, and there are many subspecies of both reindeer and caribou in Alaska.

Mtl_zack's avatar

fireside is correct. i lurve you.

At first glance, I thought the animal might have been a member of the Ibex family, but after perusing the various sub-genuses, I decided to pose my question, because I just couldn’t seem to identify it.

I’m grateful for everyone’s help. Thanks!

Hmm… I would have said it was a Springbok, so thankyou for educating me as well. It seems that the Springbok has different markings on its face, from what I can tell.

These Springboks are different again! I didn’t know antelopes could catch balls…

JackAdams's avatar

Are the Springboks your favourite Rugby team?

They are in South Africa, and not Australia…

shrubbery's avatar

If they’re playing against the all blacks, yes. If they’re playing against the wallabies no. Australia first always! They’re my dad’s first team though, his family are from South Africa. But he has a jumper for all three teams so he can barrack for whoever he feels like :P

JackAdams's avatar

I guess he can Obama for whoever he feels like, as well.

shrubbery's avatar

Har har. How did I know that one was coming? :P

JackAdams's avatar

Because all women can read minds.

shrubbery's avatar

Correctamondo!
:D
