You know the term, picking only the details that help your cause or what not… is there a term for the opposite, picking only the details that derail a cause?

First you have to have an open mind yourself. Try to approach the subject with no perceived thoughts. Leave room for a little doubt even if in your own mind you are 90% sure based on your early findings. Part of the educational process is to hear and study the apposing views. The more information the better. This way you can get a true sense of what is fact and what is fiction. Once you finish processing all the information take time to nurture your opinion on the subject. After you are sure of the consistency of your research you will be ready to relay your hypothesis.
I think cherry picking can work either way as it’s the act of pointing at individual cases or data that seem to confirm a particular position, while ignoring a significant portion of related cases or data that may contradict that position.
It matters not if it’s for or against a certain stance.
Painting a broad-brush canvas.
robmandu… you’re totally right, but was hoping there might be a term for the negative.
I think Harp is right: “nit-picking” is finding the little negatives in an otherwise good thing.
@Alex, gailcalled provided a suitable opposite: painting with broad strokes implies overlooking important details.
