Hawaiian Hurricanes?

Asked by xgunther (449points) August 11th, 2007 from iPhone

How come hurricanes are so infrequent for the Hawaiian islands? I'd suspect this is due to the cooler water, but then how did Iniki (think I spelled that right) stay so strong?

The reason they hit Hawaii so infrequently in comparison to the mainland is a matter of size. Hawaii is tiny in comparison to the mainland. Often hurricanes pass by th islands. Unfortunatly Iniki hit Kauai head on therfore the distruction was immense.
