@insert name?
Why do people place the @ in front of peoples names when they are talking to them. I noticed I do this all the time now, but I have no idea why I am doing it?

To address a remark specifically to another Fluther user, and to differentiate that from a general answer to the question.
@Marina
I’d been missing you!
@ critter1982 – I agree whith marina. Let me demonstrate.
@ critter1982 – I am dying to know, because I can’t figure it out, what is your icon?
@Bri
Is a hampster, isn’t it?
@Bri L – Its a mouse on top of a mouse. Love your icon btw.
I think I’m going to be radical and not put the @ in front of peoples names anymore, only their name.
A mouse sitting on a mouse…
Wow, it is so totally clear now!
I thought it was a turtle head resting on something red.
Thanks for the nod to my icon. hehe
@critter OK. I seriously thought that your avatar was the New England Patriots logo. Seriously. I must need glasses.
Now that I know what your avatar is….I really like it :)
@Snoopy: Your avatar is on of my favorites on the site.
@shilolo: and your old avatar was too.
@pete. You mean the conehead? If so, I’ll change it back, just for you…
@pete awww….shucks.
@ shilolo While we are on (or rather off) the topic….what is your avatar? To me it looks like the mouth of some sinister underwater creature. Based on the fact that I was so off base about critter’s avatar, I am guessing that I am wrong about yours too….? :)
@snoopy. It is a form of deep sea jellyfish. I recently bought a book called The Deep, and this book has the most awesome pics you’ve ever seen in your life. This is one of many deep sea creatures that I just love.
@shilolo Well…at least I wasn’t totally off base :)
yeah critter, I love your icon. What did the babies look like?
Why hasn’t someone used an icon of Carl Icon?
Back in the 90’s, when we were chatting on IRC channels, we used the ”:” symbol, as in “john: where are you from?”.
The problem is that ”:” is more commonly used in written language than ” @ ”. Thus, to avoid confusion, it’s better to have special characters like ” @ ” used in special situations.
He means that if there is a mouse on a mouse, then babies must have resulted, get it?
haha. Sorry I should have gotten that one.
my gripe is when people misuse the ”@.”
IE i wouldnt say “i really like kittens @critter. ”
It would be ”@critter i really like kittens” i really doesnt make sense the other way, replace @ with at. It really annoys when people will say a list of peoples names and say ”@critter,@JA,@Bri L…...” only one @ is needed, and at the begining.
I believe it was robmandu who first proposed it but if im using a users name in the middle of a sentence i’ll just bold it instead of putting an ”@” that doesnt make sense.
/rant
@critter. I didn’t get it either
@shilolo: yeah, the conehead. is there a story behind it?
@Snoopy: I used to think your icon was a smart-ass owl! I only recently learned how to enlarge icon pics and was finally able to make it out.
@augustlan – how do you enlarge icon pics?
Forgive me for the bad explanation that is sure to follow: Right click on the icon. Click “properties”. Copy the URL Address. Paste it into your browser window. It’ll be a long string of characters, ending with “thumb.jpg” . Delete the “thumb” portion, including the underscore right in front of it and hit go. You’ll see a full size picture (most of the time…sometimes the original pic really is that small)!
Any time…I can’t remember who showed me how to do it, or I’d give them credit!
@Pete. Here is the story behind the conehead. Basically, I’m a dork.
@august, lurve for you for that trick.
