Simple Video Conversion for AppleTV and iPhone (MP4)
I used to use VisualHub to convert AVI and MKV files to MP4 and it worked really well and was a very simple process. Lately, VisualHub hasn’t been working properly and the developer has discontinued it.
Does anyone know of (preferably free) software for Mac OSX that can be used to convert videos to MP4?

You know you can do this straight from iTunes?
Go to the movies section then right click on a video and press “Create Apple Tv Version” or “Convert for iPhone/iPod Touch.” Hope I helped.
QuickTime Pro can handle most files, too – or look at Handbrake.
In QT Pro, open the MKV and select Video Properties. Remove any unnecessary tracks (subtitles, foreign languages) then Save As a self-contained movie.
VLC media player. File -> Streaming/transcoding wizard -> put in all your settings (MP4 video +audio) then convert
You should try handbrake for Dvds and iSquint for video files. Both are free and open-source.
Check out iSquint if you can’t get it into iTunes.

@Pixel: iTunes can convert Quicktime and MPEG files for the iPhone. It doesn’t seem like it can convert AVI to MP4.
So, I caved and bought QT Pro. It takes a LOT longer than VisualHub to convert video but at least it works.
You should have just used VLC, its free and takes about 5 minutes for a 30minute clip
I tried VLC but for some reason, I couldn’t get it to work right. Besides, it said itself that it wasnt meant to work for files and was suited for streaming video.
Oh well… I guess its too late now.
If you have settings or instructions I should have used for VLC, let me know.
