I keep having déjà vu does anyone know what's wrong?

Asked by jdogg (871points) October 14th, 2008 from iPhone

I keep thinking something happened before that never has and I keep having these weird dreams that I think I remember before but I haven’t. It’s so annoying! Any help??

Are you sure the event didn’t happen before? The very few instances of deja vu I’ve had (fully awake) still make me wonder.

I think dreams are a different species.

I read somewhere dejavu is like a memory short circuit. For example, you are at work and a brown dog walks by and pees on a tree. At some point before this you have seen a dog pee on a tree, or seen a dig at work. Your brain did not register some detail of the previous encounter like place, time, or some other detail so when something close but seperate happens it seems the same since the original event wasn’t stored correctly. I’m sure I could have worded this better but maybe u see what I’m saying

Dont worry, its just a glitch in the Matrix.

the wiki page is actually pretty interesting if you feel like reading.

Here is some recent research on this. I don’t know if you will find it helpful. Excerpt:

“Neuroscientists at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT report in the June 7 early online edition of Science that they have identified for the first time a neuronal mechanism that helps us rapidly distinguish similar, yet distinct, places. The discovery helps explain the sensation of déjà vu.

The work could lead to treatments for memory-related disorders, as well as for the confusion and disorientation that plague elderly individuals who have trouble distinguishing between separate but similar places and experiences.”

Here is a more spiritual take it on it from someone who has frequent bouts of it as you describe.

@rotwang what was the whole point of that

watchman220's avatar

I have had similar events.
Once in a while I have a very surprising moment.

I have dreamt certain things before. And those images come flooding back to me at a certain obscure and seemingly random moment. I take it as a sign that God has put me in the place I am currently in and He is in control.

The dreams are sometimes vivid and sometimes vague. But they always seem to have that familiarity.

Scripture says, about the last days, that during that time, “Your old men shall see visions and your young men shall dream dreams.” Perhaps God is trying to persuade you that there is more to life than your mundane every day “matrix-like” existence.

Perhaps you should take the pill and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. =)

What do you have to lose?

@rotwang You are mistaken about what is annoying here.

Nothing is wrong with you. I get them allot. Sometimes I can feel things that will happen in a few seconds and it’s pretty accurate. They kept coming more often as I grew up.

As I do believe in reincarnation, maybe you are remembering a few bits of your past life(s)... It has happened to me a lot, lot lot, to the point that I had to go to the shrink, and had a hypnosis session to see what was going on….

SAME STORY ABOUT ME!! How come I always see something and think that it already happened?! It’s so cool to find someone that actually notices these things and I am not alone on this.
At least I’m on the right page of civilization….i guess >.>

I will see random things like, my mom types on the keyboard and my brother sips water. Then, I’m like OH YEAH and dad scratches his shoulder! I remember this!
(that was a really bad example)

jdogg's avatar

Cool feels good to know that it isn’t just me!

jdogg's avatar

Do you ever feel like you know your way somewhere or think youve been there before (for me it was wrigley field)

90s_kid's avatar

ALWAYS think I’ve been somewhere before. My dad works at a big college and he used to take me there in every room when he was baby-watching me. Now I am 14 and all these people who work with them are like “remember me? I work at blablabla building!” im like ”..................no” but then I go into the building and I’m like I KNOW THIS. So i guess the brain does have memory when you are a baby. >.>

I have had the same same thing happen to me years ago. I didn’t know what was wrong. One day I decided to let it flow and see what happened, it was all fine. So, let it happen a few more times. I eventually have a seizure. It can be a symptom of temporal lobe epilepsy. I still have them now. I take medication now too, or course. But, the Deja Vu was the first symptoms I ever had.
