What is an all-nighter?

Asked by thetmle (696points) October 15th, 2008 from iPhone

I’ve always considered an all-nighter staying up through the night and the next day. My friend and I were just talking about this…he considers an all-nighter staying awake until 7 or 8 in the morning and then going to bed.

I think they both qualify.

Well, I think it’s just meant for staying up until morning time, but if you stay up all the next day, then you stayed up all night also. Maybe your could call yours a hardcore all-nighter. =)

I suppose both are all nighters, but for me its staying up until the next night until you finally sleep.

Getting up on day 1, then staying up all night that night, and then staying up all day on day 2 is an all-nighter.

Staying up until dawn is just going to bed late.

I think an all-nighter is staying awake for 24 hours straight.

Where I come from, an all-nighter is staying up all night. When I first got to college, it would involve studying, or for some other people, partying. You went to bed when the sun came up, because then it’s no longer night, see?

Later in life, I would sometimes stay up until sunrise doing nothing in particular, though, and I didn’t really think of THAT as being an “all-nighter”—like Pete up there said, that’s just “staying up late.” ;) I think that “all-nighter” implies EFFORT – staying up ALL NIGHT to accomplish something (like studying for a test, or going to an epic party) that is hard to do. It’s the spirit of what you’re doing, as well as the hours, that make it an all-nighter.

I believe an all nighter is staying up all night hence the name all nighter. I don’t think it matters when you go to bed the next day as long as you stay up all night.

I completely agree with laureth. I don’t consider idly moping around during the night to be and “all-nighter”. I’ve pulled several since coming to high school at MSMS (Mississippi School for Math and Science) and this has since provided the word “effort” a new definition, as well as allowing me to view the nocturnal hours with a greater since of value. If one is going to be up as opposed to doing the enjoyable thing and SLEEPING, he should make efficient use of the time. Some of us don’t have that luxury.

If I got to bed at 7 or 8 am, then I’ll only be getting 30–60 minutes of sleep anyway. Based on that, I’ll call either one an all-nighter.
