Where can I find information about the candidates for my local legislative candidates?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12594points) October 15th, 2008

Specifically:
-What races will be on the ballot on Nov. 4
-Any propositions that will be on the ballot
-The names of the candidates in each race
-Each candidate’s political affiliation
-Possibly a bio about each of them or a link to their website

Somehow it seems like I already knew these things by this point in years past. I guess I was more active in my political club back in the day.

I pretty much already know I’ll just end up voting for all the people who are going to lose, here in Texas, but I would at least like to know who they are before I walk into the voting booth.

Sample ballots in Texas are done at the county level. Go online to the Texas Secretary of State’s office to find the link for your county. The sample ballot will provide much of what you asked for.

For bios and positions try the newspaper, the League of Women Voters, or in some states there is an election guide.

Thanks Marina! Exactly what I was looking for, as always! How do you know everything?!? Honestly?!? I should write a question that just says “How does Marina KNOW. EVERYTHING.?”

Gar, now I just have to figure out which state board of education district i’m in, state senate district, state rep. district, and court of appeals district, and i’ll be good to go!

One of the FAQ is “Help! I don’t know what county I live in!”
LOL. At least I don’t have that problem…

Alriiiight, I figured out what districts I’m in, but my state senate district doesn’t seem to be on the ballot this year. I find that odd. Some state senate districts are having elections and others are not?

I have had this identical question the past few days. Can anyone help me find mine?

I would try googling your state and “sample ballot”, based on what marina said above. If that doesn’t work I’m sure she’ll be back tomorrow and give a magic link that tells you everything you want to know.

Here’s a site showing the Texas Democratic State Senate candidates. Out of 31 (I think) state senate districts, the democrats seem to be running only 11 candidates. Districts may elect senators on a rotating basis (one-third every two years), or the Democrats may not be fielding candidates in all districts. My guess is that it’s the former. Are State Senate terms for six years?

Almost. Here’s what Wikipedia says:

The Texas Constitution sets the qualifications for election to each house as follows:

Each senator serves a four-year term and one-half of the Senate membership is elected every two years in even-numbered years, with the exception that all 31 Senate seats are up for election for the first legislature following the decennial census in order to reflect the newly redrawn districts. After the initial election, the Senate is divided by lot into two classes, with one class having a re-election after two years and the other having a re-election after four years.

Ok, I really can’t find any of that information for myself.

Can someone please help me find the NC equivalent? For the ballot and the candidates?

Try this: http://vote-nc.org/Default.aspx

I just did it for my address, and it didn’t provide complete information (School Board and the Judges were missing) but it’s not bad for at least telling you who the candidates are.
