Are Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert secretly rooting for a McCain victory?

Their shows have blown up with the Republicans in charge. If Democrats take the White House, Congress, and the Senate, will there be less to make fun of? Or, are all politicians so messed up that they are easily satirized?

I would agree with the last question you posed—those guys could make fun of anyone. Remember when Hilary Clinton was a candidate? They were rapping on her all day long. Heck, they still are…this is snl, but still.
No. I think both have been very obvious about wanting Obama as president. I agree that they would have more fodder w/ Repubs in charge but they’ll have plenty to feed off of irrespective of the party. Plus, they have been pretty consistent about mocking both parties during this election season, so it won’t look like they pulled a 180 degrees on their script.
Well think of it this way- as long as there’s a Bill Oreilly and a Rush Limbaugh and a Fox News, then Colbert will always have work. And all of the above ain’t goin’ nowhere!
Wow, JP, thank you for the link! That was so entertaining and enlightening at the same time! I’ve never seen Jon Stewart be so serious! But he was still so funny!
Since republicans tend not to understand any kind of intellectual humor (not that snl can always be said to fit in that category—and I don’t know about Stewart and Colbert since I’ve never seen them), comedians with any brains, by default, end up as democratic supporters.
However, should a democratic administration fuck up, you can be sure that the comedians will be satirizing them mercilessly, too. I can only imagine what the snl impersonators of Obama and Biden will be like. There is much there to make fun of.
The republicans have made a theme of his “slickness.” As if he’s pulling something over on the public. Remember “Slick Willy?” It’s basically a republican ploy to try to turn the brains difference their way. Joe Sixpack, and Joe the Plumber are the same thing. It’s a hamfisted way of trying to get supposedly stupid working americans to mistrust intelligence (they don’t get it) and support republican policies.
I don’t think so. And I say this because, as he signed off on the night before Election ‘04, Jon Stewart pleaded with his viewers to, “PLEASE make the next four years hard for me. PLEASE.”
I don’t think I’ll ever forget that. :(
I’d say there might be something to your concerns if it weren’t for this.
Maybe Tina Fey is a good indicator of how Stewart and Colbert may feel.
Thanks for that link johnpowell, I haven’t seen that clip in years.
All comedy shows expect a bump during the election year, but I am sure that Jon Stewart and his comedy team can find plenty of things to laugh at regardless of who is President.
It must be hard to be torn this way. As comedians of course they want the easy target and so far all Obama has given them is the intellectual black man and if they try to satirize that they get dangerously close to racism. Of course Colbert can take the O’Reilly/Limbaugh persona and make fun of what they might say. And Biden is a little verbose (yawn) Bot McCain and Palin are so easy, the jokes almost write themselves.
And economically they would probably be better off with McCain, but as thoughtful Americans they must surely agree that we have to make a change and we have to work together, that won’t happen with McCain/Palin and people who think it will are up to their necks in denial.
Plus, Palin is now on the radar and will do everything she can to stay in the national spotlight.
I’m sure they will take the time to inform us of all her public gaffes.
I have the feeling that Gov Palin will be this generation’s Nixon. No matter what she does she will keep coming back until she achieves her goal…God help us all!
