You mean that sketch where Letterman insulted McCain and then McCain appeared and insulted Letterman? (I happened to see that one on YouTube)

If so, then no: it was obviously staged, and pretty funny IMO. In fact, I was quite surprised to see McCain actually look like a human at certain moments :P

No. McCain was on the Letterman show yesterday. I guess you missed it.

I didn’t see it last night, but this doesn’t seem to be rude. Not sure what else was said.

Isn’t he always?

Guys, clearly these “clips” are not showing the entire 20 minutes or so. This question is meant for those who saw the actual show. Thanks.

After Letterman blasted McCain for two weeks. Letterman could not very well be all nice. He would appear like push over to his fans. I actually thought he was nice for what I expected.

Saw the show last night. I don’t think Letterman was being rude, I just think he’s been around so long, and the country is, well, such as it is, that he no longer feels the need to pander to his guests. Even if the guest is running for president.

I don’t think Letterman was nearly as rude as McCain was when he gave a phony excuse for not showing up the first time.

Sorry, the Letterman Show is not broadcasted here. Coincidentally just this morning I saw this clip, and, as I hardly ever watch anything related to US Politics, let alone the Letterman show, I supposed the coincidence of the fact must have meant that you referred to that clip. My apologies, I’ll stop following now :)

Mr_M's avatar

@basp, that’s not the point. I’m talking specifically at last night’s show (justified or not).

basp's avatar

well then, MrM , I guess my answer would be no letterman wasn’t rude.

elchoopanebre's avatar

Lettermann’s pretty much always an a**hole in my opinion.

SoapChef's avatar

He should have been rude. I’m watching it tivoed right now.

In my opinion, Letterman is ‘rude’ most of the time to any of his guest! I can’t stand him at all and won’t waste my sleep watching him.

No, he wasn’t. I think people are missing the scenario here. A few weeks ago McCain was scheduled to appear on Letterman and he cancelled about an hour before, saying he had to rush to Washington to save the economy. Dave was behind this until he found out that, McCain was actually down the street doing an interview with Katie Couric and didn’t return to Washington until the next morning. Dave has had fun with that since then. I think it was big of him to even have McCain back.
I just watched it and I think Dave did an outstanding job of holding his feet to the fire. Dave obviously doesn’t agree with his politics, but he treated him with respect and, I think should have been a lot tougher. He has done a better job than anyone else of pointing out the hypocrisy of his claims of repudiating any negative comments, while his VP is standing at rallies, saying he Pals around with terrorists and more.

The second part of what you posted is the kind of answer I was looking for. The reasons Letterman was the way he was was not relevant to the question. I simply asked if Letterman was rude last night and you answered it. Thanks.

I second that SoapChef!

I didnt see last nights Letterman, but if he was rude, he has every right to be

EDIT: if your talking about this he mccain deserved it.

Mr M
I am fairly new here and am still trying to learn the culture. I noticed several times that you indicated to the respondant what you were looking for in an answer. So if I read you correctly, the idea behind responding is to respond in the way the person asking the question wants them to…. Is that correct?
Thanks for your assistance. I’m sure with your help I’ll learn the culture around here quickly.

MrM I don’t think he was rude.

And just a comment. I think McCain showed a humor we have never seen before. I was reminded of Bob Dole when he was running against Clinton. After he lost he was all over the talk shows and was the funniest thing ever. He was personable, relaxed. Everything he wasn’t when he was running. Everything that the people wanted him to be.

Mr_M's avatar

@Bri, true. Did you see the clip @Vincentt posted? It’s even funnier.

@basp, what I was trying to do was not to have people answer the question THE WAY I want. I wanted people to answer the question, PERIOD.

I was asking “Was he or was he NOT rude”

Some people were answering “he SHOULD have been rude because…” and although I understand the reason Letterman might have been rude, I wasn’t asking that. I was asking if people thought he WAS rude. As you see, people did not think he was. I did.

basp's avatar

oh, I see, MrM. Now I understand. Seems that my original answer was sufficient after all. Thank you so very much for helping me to learn how things work around here.

None, or very few, exchanges between guests and hosts (Letterman, Leno….) are truly spontaneous. The rules of dialogue are established and often rehearsed and the more “weight” a guest has, the more rules they can establish.

Bri_L's avatar

@Mr_M It was even funnier.
