I have seen everything from South-South-East, to South…South…East. I just want to know for standard prepossess, like a flier you would pin up in a park, or a novel.

Most correct ;-) would be south-south-east. And south by south-east is also right.
Personally I tend to use SSE (informally) or south-southeast.
In what context is something South South East?
I would think it would be South Southeast, actually.
Okay, I believe you both have it right. South Southeast is the “official” popular “ligitimit” way of writing it! Thanks to you both!
That statement raises another question in my mind as I right this… what is with this new “Thank xuser” after the “Flag as…” link?
It’s not new. If the answer is really great, you can send the answerer a PM to let it know.
Great. I’m thrilled I was correct. Why misspell legitimate? Am I missing the joke in quotes?
You never answered my question about the context.
Oh, sorry. I missed spell checking that one. It wasn’t a joke, I just can’t spell and am sometimes found to lapse of continuousness.
The context of the “South, Southeast.” is in a novel I am currently in the procsess of writing and it should be finished before the end of the world, assuming I don’t jump off a bridge or try to stop a train with a tennis racket.
The lines is as follows:
”...they could see the lights of Quebec to the South, Southeast. They had over shot their target…”
Also notice that except in your title, compass directions should be written in lower-case.
mmm. I didn’t know that one! Thanks again!
Box the compass
16 -point compass rose is simple. The mariner’s one of 32 points is more precise and useful if you are trying to avoid that reef in heavy fog.
Wow, looking at Gail’s link, I’d forgotten that south by south-east is NOT exactly the same as south south-east!
@Zaku: Is that an iceberg I see off the starboard bow?
BOOM!
“oops”
“dang compass”
/bubbling sounds.
