Reprogram key on keyboard?

Asked by skbailey99 (1points) October 19th, 2008

My mother is not very tech-savvy and has a problem with her laptop that I’m trying to help her with from abroad. Is there an easy way to reprogram keyboard keys? Her “x” is broken and has been told, I believe, that it would cost a bit to fix it. However, is there a way to just program another key to become the x?? Thanks!

I’m just going to assume that you are using Windows

There is a tool by MS here. In this package, there is a key remapper. Your milage may vary, however. I would recommend sending her just the key remapper, as all of the other packages are just begging for trouble…

Ummm…I have about a dozen unused keyboards if she wants one.

This raises a question, does you mom want to keep with an integrated laptop keyboard or does she mind using an external one?

@mea05key:
Not necessarily, as it’s not a keyboard you plug in, it’s one built into the laptop.

You could use this program and remap a useless key (eg scroll lock) as “x”. Plus, it’s free.
