Are there agencies that take donated stuff AND will pick it up for free?

Asked by Mr_M (7624points) October 19th, 2008

I decided I want to get rid of my treadmill, my 30 year old amplifier and an artificial Christmas tree (with lights) that all work. Is there some agency that would want them AND pick them up?

Purple Heart does, in my area. YMMV.

I’m in NY.

Salvation Army, too.

In my area, the disable veterans group will pick up donated items.

Goodwill

If you don’t want a tax deduction, leave the amp and the Xmas tree on the curb. They will disappear before you can say “Yankee Stadium.” I would try Craig’s list for the treadmill, if it is decent and running well.

New York City?

@augustian, Salvation Army will take the amplifier but not the treadmill nor tree.

@gail, Westchester.

I don’t remember the name, maybe Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, or something rather; but you mark your stuff with this gold tape they give you, they pick it up, and it’s tax deductible. My family donates old clothes and such all the time.

Purple Heart and some agencies for the blind do as well.

Goodwill no longer picks up. So far, Goodwill wont pick up and Salvation Army only wants the amplifier!

Sad, that places are picky when it’s being given to them. It’s the same here tho.
Have you tried putting it out on the street with a sign that says FREE? Anything i try to toss out gets picked up on my street. It’s amazing what ppl want.

UNITED WAY is the way to go!!! As soon as you tell them what you have, they send it electronically to some 250 volunteer organizations. Within MINUTES I got several calls. The tree’s going to a soup kitchen, the treadmill to another agency and I decided to keep the amplifier.

Very cool and very good to know. tx.

And I’m getting many calls this next day, too.

I called United Way to ask if I have to answer these calls. They told me no. Wait until the items are actually picked up, though. In case there’s a no show, I’d go to the next caller.

UPDATE! The agency who wanted the treadmill sent ONE WOMAN to pick it up! With an SUV! I don’t know WHAT they had in mind but it is a full size, electric threadmill! So now it’s out in my hallway (I needed someone to hep me get it through the door!). I’m calling the other agencies that left messages. I’m hoping i could get someone to come TODAY!

Moral of the story: specify the dimensions of what you got and whether or not it’s electric.

Got an agency to come the next day (yesterday). They sent two men and a van for the treadmill. All went perfectly. And the soup kitchen people picked up the tree. It gives me a happy feeling to give the soup kitchen a tree. They say at Christmas they get lots of kids. Today I’ll go through my decorations and see if I can give them some.
