I am considering purchasing one for myself (for exercise?) and fun for the family. I have two small kids. What programs/games would you recommend? Are accesories necessary?

To get started, I would pick up…
For the adults: Okami (very long adventure game), Zack & Wiki (cheap and great!)
For everybody: Super Mario Galaxy, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Tetris Party (downloadable), World of Goo (downloadable), then download some classics! Super Mario Bros. 1 & 3, old Zelda games.
Accessories: 1 or 2 extra remotes, 2 classic controllers. Nothing more!
WiiFit is fun, but you’ll tire of it fast. And you get Wii Sports for free! This stuff is all Grade-A, and tons of fun.
Super Mario Galaxy, LEGO Star Wars.
I second Wario Ware: Smooth Moves. EXCELLENT party game for the whole family.
I’ve enjoyed Trauma Center a lot… the thought of “performing surgery” in a video game seems whacked, I’ll admit.. but it’s fun.
I suggest wi sports. My wife my 5 year old son, 3 year old daughter and I had a ball at my brothers house. My boy beat us.
Here’s some games from the virtual console (Nintendo’s Retro Download Service) that I’d recommend:
Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, & 3
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time
Gunstar Heroes
Kirby’s Adventure
Samurai Showdown 2 (if you like fighting games)
Metroid, Super Metroid
Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG (if you like RPG’s)
Starfox 64
These games are all excellent, and vary from $5—$10. Not a bad deal!
We have the Wii Sports and the Wii fit and they are both great. The best thing is that all age groups and people with all ability levels can enjoy the games. We have not tired of ours yet. It has been a lot of fun.
Mario Galaxy is one of the best games, ever.
I’ve been having a great time with Mario Kart, as well.
Then we obviously aren’t keeping you busy enough, Andrew ;)
The Wii is great. For a generous price you’re able to play with the whole family. I love how anybody can play like a pro the firt time using a Wii. It’s family friendly and anyone can play!
My husband is manager at GameStop and his recommendation to you is “Don’t buy one.”
You’ll get bored of it really quickly. He said to get a GameCube. Personally I love my X-Box 360 and to exercise I clean my apartment.

I second everyone’s opinion :) The Wii is great, lots of fun and really interactive. The people at Nintendo are geniuses for inventing really creative and fun games. I have the Wii Fit, and I’ve found that it’s a great way to keep from getting bored while you do basic exercises at home. My problem is that I hate running and gyms are too expensive! So the Wii Fit is a good way around those problems.
I love Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports is also great for getting up and moving around and getting everyone involved.
I’ve got all 3 main consoles and the Wii has definately taken the PS2’s title of casual gaming console. It’s great for everyone from kids to the elderly. My boys are 6 & 9. (The 6 y/o is the gamer.)
They love Wii Play and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For the family Wii Fit is fun, but, as it’s been stated, attention span dwindles after a short period. There’s a Nerf shooting game too that the boys like a lot.
Other popular games here are Game Party and Star Wars:The Clone Wars.
Of course there’s Zelda, but that’s a requirement since it’s one of the Top 3 Wii games along with SSBB and Mario Cart.
One of the Cooking Mama games (there are two out, I believe). They’re very cute, and the objectives are very easy for young children to follow, yet fun for all ages. Basically follow the motions to emulate cooking a certain recipe. Some of these motions are quite a workout!
