General Question

Can you help me identify these three songs?

Asked by andrew (16562points) October 26th, 2008

From easiest to hardest:

The consummate “breakdancing” song, probably from the 80’s. Starts with old school scratches and then synth goes “da DUN, da DUN, da DA DA DA… dit da-da da” over drum kit. Bonus Question: Why is this so closely identified with breakdancing?

Second two I heard on KCRW yesterday and loved them.

One was a breathy woman singing, thick beats, with lyrics “my heart goes ‘boom’ my breath ‘shaka shaka’”.

The other was a new indie rock song… something about “heart” in the chorus. I remember a lot of the verses had internal rhymes in them…what was great was some really interesting duet harmonies between the male and female singers, and the chorus had some percussive bass drum accentuating the rhythm.

Might the last one be You Dress Up For Amageddon by The Hives? It’s the only song i know with heart in it. (besides love songs of course) Great song, the only one on their new album IMO.

Could it be this?
if that’s the case the futuristic sound, the scratching, and the lack of lyrics make it an easy choice for the development of breakdancing. I know I’ve seen a LOT of breakers perform to it. Also, it’s freaking awesome.

As for My heart Goes Boom… that’s all that I can think of. But I dunno if that’s it. I doubt it.

Yes. Definitely Herbie Hancock’s Rockit for #3.

Not the song for the second one, though.

@wil Definitely didn’t sound like the Hives.

Around what time were you listening to KCRW yesterday?

andrew's avatar

I just looked at their playlist. It was shortly before 2 PM, but none of the songs sound familiar. Maybe it was indie 103.1.

The second song is Boom by Anjulie. You can hear it here

Edit – It’s from the album Boom Ep

Oh…and in case you want to stalk her (or you know, just tell her that you love the song)

@PnL: That’s a great song, thanks for the link and the figuring it out. :) I just found a new song and a new artist to dig.

@andrew: I have a LOT of indie rock, do you remember anything else about that song? Anything? I have about a 1tb of music…so. Yeah. Chances are good.

I heard a new Ben Folds duet the other day (I forget the female singer’s name) and it had a strong bass drum beat.

@heart: This? Regina Spektor

It doesn’t have heart in the chorus though..

@asmonet – i am glad i found it too. I really like it and have been blasting the song out loud. She holds great promise, will be sure to check out her album when it releases in November. As for the first song, I think andrew needs to record himself humming it or something, the description provided is not enough!

Yeah- I just remembered that it was Regina Spektor and came back to add that. I’m on my iPhone and multitasking, so I didn’t have time for research.

@PnL: YES! You got it! Now just need to find the other song!

Andrew, you should get the Shazam app for your iPhone. It’s for situations just like this. It really works great.

andrew's avatar

@breedmitch: Except for the fact that I don’t have anything to play for shazaam.

@PnL: Drat! You can’t buy it on iTunes!

Oops! Sorry. The first song I listed was Rockit. The third song played immediately before Boom on whatever radio station I was listening to shortly before 2.

GOT IT! From Pnl’s facebook link i was able to verify it WAS on KCRW, AND that it was on Chris Douridas’s show. From there, I found http://legacy.kcrw.com/online/playlists/081025.html, (which I had been looking at, but the TIMES are wrong!) Then I found that my memory was incorrect… that the song was acutally on 10 minutes before “Boom” and finally found it!

It’s O My Heart by Mother Mother! Fluther FTW!

Edit: Here’s a link to the video

Andrew, the song Boom will be out in iTunes sometime in November. And I didn’t realize that the remaining song was the 3rd one (i was thinking it was the 1st one), otherwise I would have found that in an instant! And the times aren’t wrong (O My Heart played @ 1:48 and Boom played @ 1:52), you were looking at the wrong page. This is the one I used (you have to use the calendar in the left column to choose 25th as the date you want the playlists from).

Glad to play a part in satisfying your music cravings for the day :)
