Should I start an LLC for my blog?

Asked by jballou (2128points) October 26th, 2008

I’ve noticed that many sites online are LLCs. I’m wondering what the benefits and drawbacks are to incorporating, and whether or not I should do it. I’m starting a blog, but in the future it will hopefully turn into a money making endeavor. Any advice?

Seems like a bit of overkill. You can simply have a sole proprietorship.

LLCs are popular because they have some of the limited liability that corporations do but can be filed on your personal tax return the same way as a sole proprietorship, I guess that is the main reason for going with a LLC in a sole proprietorship you have the liabilty of anything that should happen in your business, you can get more info if you go to irs.gov it will give you the info on both ways to go then you can decide the best way to go.

You should just start with a dba (doing business as).
That will allow you to claim the business expenses at tax time.
You can also claim any income through the blog for the business.

The only reason you would need to limit your liability is if you were planning on writing defamatory things in your blog that you might get sued for. If that happens and you have an LLC, then they can only take legitimate business related items to collect the debt. If you have a dba or nothing, they can actually assess the court fine against your personal property.
