Choosing a celebrity to be president?

Asked by Bluefreedom (22947points) October 26th, 2008

Disregarding the normal routine of having a politician in the Oval Office as president, what if we were to replace that with a celebrity (any celebrity of your choosing) to be the president?

Who would you choose to be our new leader and why would you choose them?

We all know this is entirely fictitious (except for Ronald Reagan, the former movie star turned President) but it’s just for fun so have fun with your answers.

My mom always says that if Oprah ran for president, she’d win the election. I agree. I don’t really know how I feel about that, though…

@shadling. One thing is for sure, if she didn’t do very well with political policy and procedure, she could always recommend good book choices in her state of the union addresses.

Craig Ferguson or George Clooney.

Arnold Schwarzenegger.

@Lightly…...from governator to prezinator ? lol

chicadelplaya's avatar

Arnold would be out because he was born in Austria. Dave Chappelle, because modern problems require modern solutions (2nd season)! HA!

SoapChef's avatar

X-nay Craig Ferguson, he was born is Scoootland.

Seriously, if you’re going to promote someone to president just on the basis of celebrity do you think it’s worth worrying about the finer details like where they were born.

Bluefreedom's avatar

That’s true. Maybe nationality isn’t that important. Just having them able to speak English is probably qualification enough. Of course, Schwarzenegger is barely understandable when he speaks though, so he might be an exception to the rule.

@LS It is just that is disqualifies them (We are just having fun here).
My picks are celebrities, but I admire both for their intelligence, logical thinking and leadership capabilities.

I wish this question wasn’t so close to reality. Arnold Schwarzenegger is my governor. Jesse Ventura was my governor when I lived in Minnesota. Who’s next – Paris Hilton?

asmonet's avatar

Kevin Spacey.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Trusting…..If Paris Hilton ever became involved in politics, perish the thought, and people out there actually voted for her in some way or another, I would completely lose all faith in humanity.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Now that I think about it, I lost all faith in George Bush about 8 years ago.

Martin Sheen

Martin Sheen would be good. He did a satisfactory job on the television show ‘The West Wing’.

SuperMouse's avatar

@BlueFreedom, I wasn’t even thinking about “The West Wing” when I wrote that answer LOL! I was remembering back in the 80’s when he was honorary mayor of Malibu and pronounced it a “nuclear free zone” and “haven for the homeless.” Needless to say he wasn’t honorary mayor for long.

Oprah would most certainly win. I would vote for her; she surrounds herself with the brightest ppl. Tho, I could not handle Dr. Phil as VP.

Jon Stewart

Tom Cruise, after that, makind will collapse

wundayatta's avatar

Woody Allen. He’d know how absurd the whole thing is, anyway!

MacBean's avatar

Betty White. Or, if nationality wasn’t a factor, Ian McKellen.

As we are a nation of overweight people, how about the very manly Richard Simmons? He could lead the country doing calisthenics every morning from the White House rose garden.

Very few celebrities would have the understanding of the political system to effectively govern. I’m never a big fan of celebrities who run for office, but I do have one very poignant and timely example of someone who might be a good choice.

In Minnesota, commedian Al Franken is running for Senate. Now in having read his books, I came to discover that he is no political lightweight. He understands our government and our lawmaking…he knows far more about good governance than many people who have been elected to national office. He has my full support in his run for Senate, not because he is a celebrity, but because he knows what he’s talking about. If he were to serve a couple terms in the Senate, and I thought he did a good job, I’d support him if he ran for President.

There are a lot of celebrities with whom I side ideologically speaking, but almost never do they have the in depth knowledge of what real governance takes. And let’s face it, being the President is a hard job, there are no “days off” (well, unless you want to be an abject failure like W). Most celebrities have a LOT of time off…they’re used to a pretty priveledged life. I’d be leery of someone thinking it was a “neat” idea and then getting in there and not being able to cut it.

Stephen Colbert.

@Nimis – I never thought of Christopher Walken! He would be great! His facial expressions and mannerisims and demeanor is hiliarous. I’d love to see him sit down and debate with (or compeletely freak out) world leaders and other politicians.

I love the Jon Stewart idea!

Does Jesus Christ count as a celebrity?

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Nimis – He’s the divine celebrity. The man with a plan. The fixer upper. Your go to guy when all hell has broken loose.

@SuperMouse: Martin Sheen was the president we’ve ever had. :P
