What exercise can I do with a bum foot?

Asked by emilyrose (2277points) October 27th, 2008

I injured my foot so I can barely walk. No running for me, and probably no yoga for the most part. I’m not a swimmer. What else can I do that won’t put much weight or pressure on my foot? I think stationary bike or biking is okay.

there is weight-lifting of course—you’ll probably want to stay away from walking lunges and that type of thing, for the most part though.

I don’t want this to sound callous, but it might be helpful (if you really do want to exercise) for you to lose the “I’m not a swimmer” attitude. Now if you don’t want to exercise, fine, do whatever you want. But swimming is one of the best exercises there is for your body, and I know it has its pitfalls, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

My friend did Pilates at home when he was injured and said it worked wonders.

Hmmm, maybe sit-ups? Something with your abs might be a good possibility.

Unfortunately, swimming really is the best choice.

You don’t mention exactly what your foor injury is…? Are you under the care of a podiatrist or orthopedist? They may be able to give you suggestions based on the seriousness, location and/or extent of your injury. You may also want to discuss physical therapy w/ you doctor. The therapists might also be able to guide you….

I have tendonitis. Just got home from the doc. It’s not really that I am “not a swimmer” I just don’t really know how to swim. I won’t drown or anything, I just never learned the proper “athletic” way to swim. Not sure I would get much exercise from the way I swim currently. Yeah maybe it is time to get abs of steel!

If you have access to a pool….even walking around in the pool can be a good way to start some light weight bearing on your foot. The buoyancy of the water helps take “weight” off of your injured foot. Plus it feels great!

I just listened to a fantastic teleseminar today with Jim Loehr.

The reason I mention it is that he talked about applying energy to whatever you want to focus on. I get that you are asking HOW, but I’m hoping to inspire you to just get in action and apply some energy – if that’s what you want to do!
