Drop something in the toilet?

Asked by mrjadkins (1256points) October 28th, 2008

Here’s the scenario: Fresh toilet water. Not used. Cleaned it with a good scrubbing about a week ago. Fresh – meaning not filled with anything but water from previous flush.

Dropped a hairbrush in there tonight. Still use the hairbrush? What if it were a toothbrush? What would you do?

Hairbrush…maybe after a thorough cleaning. Toothbrush? No way in hell. I know it’s not really logical, but I would never be able to get past the idea of it!

hairbrush, yes. Toothbrush, no.

Boil ‘em. They’ll be fine.

I’d probably throw the hairbrush out. I don’t assume that everything gets flushed down when I flush a toilet.

If you’re going to use it, do at least scrub it with soap first.

Just last nite I drop my Zippo lighter in the bowl , luckily it is just after I have flush everything down…

The magic hand comes into action.. and of course I am still using the lighter it is indeed water proof as seen on TV

For toothbrushes, send ‘em through the dishwasher. Combs, same deal. Brushes… Not sure on that one. I’d go with MacBean’s suggestion and just boil it.

Hair brush, maybe, but i’d probably just get a new tooth brush. They’re only like a dollar.

My brother dropped is cell phone in the toilet, my mother was on the phone. He switched out the sim card with another phone, and it worked again!

Well, since toothbrushes lready have fecal bacteria from your toilet on them, as long as you boil it thooughly it doesn’t really matter to me. But I wouldn’t do it.

Hairbrush, boil it.

From wiki entry on Mythbusters:
Toothbrush Surprise
Confirmed
Fecal coliform bacteria can grow in toothbrush bristles.
Fecal coliforms were indeed found on all the test brushes, including the control ones. However, none were of a level high enough to be dangerous, and experts confirm that such coliforms were impossible to completely avoid. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the number of bacteria based on where the toothbrushes were placed in respect to the toilet bowl.

@asmonet: Ughhh…I could have gone my whole life not knowing that.

@Augutslan: You’re welcome. :D

That bacteria is basically everywhere you are. Everywhere.

Like, in your kitchen.

It looks like it’s time for a new hairbrush and toothbrush.

I understand that you can sanitize anything and it won’t harm you but I have rules about using things that were where poop goes,

Supposedly, toilet water is the cleanest around. I would sterilze the hair brush and buy another tooth brush.

jca's avatar

hairbrush yes – i would wash and use.

toothbrush – 2 reasons why i wouldn’t: 1. so cheap you can replace it for a few bucks. 2. it goes in your mouth. toss it.

does the five second rule apply here:)?

wash, scrub, boil, it’s fine.

Clean the hairbrush really well. Toss the tooth brush.

Hairbrush yes, toothbrush, no.

Rinse the hairbrush well, then take in into the shower and brush my hair while I shamPOO and rinse.

Perfect time to break out a new toothbrush. I can never remember when the 6 months is up, anyway.
