Any at-home hair-dye experts out there that can offer a little assistance?

Asked by Emilyy (2133points) October 29th, 2008

I want to temporarily dye my hair for my halloween costume (and also for a little change), and I’ve never used hair color out of a box before. I used to get highlights, but haven’t in years. I want a non-permanent dye that will wash out in 28 or less washes. I bought a box of “Natural Instincts” by Clairol which I think is mostly meant to color grey and washes out in 28 shampoos. My current hair color is sort of a dirty blond/light brown with natural bleaching here and there from the sun. I just looked on the box that I bought (#28 “Nutmeg/Dark Brown”) and I realized that I bought it without noticing that it says “this shade is recommended if your current color is dark brown or black.” So, will this totally jack up my light brown/dirty blond hair? Is there a better brand/color/technique out there for me? Any help wouuld be appreciated. Thanks!

If you’re blonde, it will dye your hair dark, dark brown. It will be a startling change. And it will not wash out… it’ll fade, and then your roots will grow in, and you’ll have to bleach your hair to get the color out.

We have been every natural and unnatural color immaginable; I would opt for an inexpensive wig. You can recycle it as part of another year’s costume.

been dying my hair since i was 16…having blonde hair is a pain when applying a dark color…it ‘stains’ your hair and won’t be easy to get out.
Try Manic Panic’s Crazy Color. Then use a shampoo recommended for swimmer’s…it’ll help get it out faster. Pantene is a shampoo that strips color out. All that being said you may not get your exact shade back. How about extensions??? Go to Sally’s and check out the options.

EM Is it permanent or semi-permanent dye? Don’t use permanent, no matter what it says about washing out in x amount of shampoos. If you dye lighter hair darker, like poof said, you will have to bleach it to remove it and it is a bitch to get it to bleach evenly. There is a good chance it will go different shades of orange and you will look like a calico cat.

Wow. If Natural Instincts is meant to color grey, I must be old. Kidding. I use the same brand (for the past 7 years) and I love it. I was blonde (dirty blonde) and now I am red. I like the product because it naturally fades as you wash it, so when roots grow in they don’t look as heinous. I have been dying my hair for so long now that it really doesn’t wash out after 28 rinses (but it does fade). But if this is your first time, it very well could wash out. Darker colors are harder for us fairer skinned/hair type people because the chemicals used to make the color are harsher. You very well could end up with dark hair longer than you expected. But, all of these things are on a person to person basis. I don’t think it will ruin your hair, but you may just have darker hair for a while. What I would recommend is, don’t leave the dye on as long as you may be tempted to. Once you have everything covered, and you are ready to start timing, leave it on for no more than ten minutes (maybe less). If you are still hesitant to try it, maybe go buy a slightly lighter shade, or find a Level 1 (non-permanent) dye. (Natural Instincts is Level 2 (semi-permanent), pretty much everything else in stores is Level 3, permanent)

Just use the spray-on dye sold in Halloween costume sections. It pretty much washes out right away…you may have to wash a few times to get all of it out.

It says it’s non-permanent, but you guys have basically convinced me against dyeing altogether. I have cut my hair on a whim and bleached it myself, but I just don’t think I want to risk having to do anything to it later on in order to get it back to my natural color. The reason I stopped highlighting was to save money and look more natural, so I’d hate having to spend money on corrective color to get back to where I am now…and all for a silly halloween costume! I do have a wig that I can use…or I may just leave it—it will be dark at night anyway and no one will notice if my hair is light brown instead of dark. Thanks, everyone! You saved my hair!

Try hair mascara or the color hair gel stuff ( I have a blue bottle for my 2 year old right now) it works alright, but it washes out in 1 good wash.
I am getting ready to dye my hair right now, the pink/purple is fading…
