How do I deal with SO MANY things at the same time?

Asked by windex (2932points) October 30th, 2008

hi

ZOMG, I want to do SO many things in life (ex. learn to play the violin, have a six pack, learn how to program, travel, speak Japanese, improve as an artist etc etc.)

Buuuuuuuut…..I come home from work, by the time I take a shower, Relax, eat, check email/s, I have JUST a few hours left in the day.

I can multi task, that is not the problem, Right now (at work) i have something like a gzillion programs/windows open and take care of so many things) but when I go home, I want to relax also (at least just a bit)

I don’t even get to play any video games or have FUN (I mean I AM human after all…)

I don’t watch TV
I don’t waste time at Bars/clubs with friends
I don’t waste time and just “hang out”
Funny, I don’t even have a family/wife/kids/gf

How do I find the time to do things? I can only consume so much caffeine and pull so many all nighters before my Heart stops..How do people do it?

What do I do? Do I just sacrifice some things…the whole “in order to gain something, you must give up something else in return..” ?

can I just go into bullet time and take care of a few things?

Prioritize the things you deem most important. You’ve got your whole life (I’m assuming you’re in your 20’s?)...you’ll have plenty of time. Don’t rush thru everything, take time and really take in the things that matter most of all. You don’t have to do everything in one year…

Read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
It will help you to prioritize (like dolly said.)
You segment tasks into
1. Important and urgent,
2. Important not urgent,
3. Not important and urgent,
4. Not important not urgent.
When you discover all the #3’s and 4’s you’re doing you will prioritize your life so you’re doing more 2’s so you won’t have any 1’s. Now I need to get off the Internet and work on those 1’s and 2’s!

@deaddolly: The most important, and I’d say the ONLY thing that I think matters to me is LOVE. But if I find love first (or love finds me) then a lot of the things on my list might not be possible (due to me having a family other responsibilities etc.)

@Judi: Thanks! I’ll remember that, good list

Hey windex i am having the same problem as you. Time seem to fly away easily. It happens after coming back from work, eat and as soon as sit on my chair i go lazy till bed time. Looking forward for some useful tips over here.

@windex Are you looking for love in all the wrong places??? Sorry, i couldn’t stop myself…(no self control). Have you tried OKCUPID? It’s an interesting FREE dating site. And when you STOP looking for love; it’ll find you.

Make a list.
Prioritize.
Focus.

Multi-tasking isn’t always the most efficient way to get things done. Try spending a week or two just doing one thing at a time and then try to knock two or three things off your list each day.

Hi Windex—I can help with a suggestion for at least one of those. I like to take various classes, but if I got home, my time seems to just disappear. So instead, I took classes that I could go to straight from work. I’m not a good violin player at this point, but I can get a tune off the thing. (I only did that class for 8 weeks, not particularly enjoyable). Now I take a dance class. Just find the classes near you, sign up, and force yourself to go.

The just after work block works for me because I can’t go home between. It might be the early Saturday that works for you. Honestly, I perked up at the “learn violin” because I did that for a bit, you know?

You will always do the things you want to do.
The fact that you don’t do them is because you chose to do something else first.

ofter so many years of dealing with a zillion things at the same time, I found out that red bull and sugar flakes makes the perfect “breakfast of champions”
That always help :)

There will come a time when you realize you want completely different things and that basically you have to start from square one to get to these new goals anyway. So, even though it sounds like Xeno’s paradox (the “You can’t even start” one), you shouldn’t worry because it’s just that life’s in box is always full. Personally, I have never found giving up one thing for another intentionally helpful- sure, you only have so much time in a day, but the more you do, the more you do. That said, tonight I’m just going to surf the internet for a while and go to sleep early because I’m exhausted. What a life!

We read a book last spring that proves no one can really multitask: the brain can’t do it.
The guy said (sorry, I can’t remember his name, but the book was called…. Brain Rules)
that multitasking is probably a concept invented by managers who want their peons to do more in less time for the same amount of money. Don’t let this scam get you down.

Instead, decide you’ll never get “everything” done and just get going on the stuff you’re attracted to. Pretty soon you’ll remember there are a couple of things you ought to get out of the way in order to stay out of trouble. These are probably what some people would call “Important and urgent”. But they’re not that important to YOU, so you don’t have to put a lot of energy into them. You can do them just to ease your mind. Then go back to the good stuff.

In other words, follow your bliss, and trust yourself to keep the necessary dopey stuff taken care of in off moments.

This subversive message brought to you in perfect sincerity from the desk of Susan Hussein C.

You don’t play video games but you tag a sweet ass Max Payne reference at the end. Come on man.

Pick one goal. Pick a date. Do that thing by the date. For example if it’s the violin, maybe you want to be able to play a certain song by a certain date and you have to practice to get there. A lot of things can be learned with just a 30 minute a day commitment.
