Should I stop drinking coffee?
When I don’t have my fix, the withdrawal symptoms can be unbearable. Last week, I started vomiting at school because I hadn’t had coffee in over a day.
I am a barista, and I enjoy caffeinated beverages.
Advice?

It sounds like the addiction is already really serious, if withdrawal makes you vomit. I think you should wean yourself off the stuff. If you don’t now, it’ll only be harder to quit in the future.
I can’t drink coffee, personally. It makes me anxious.
Wean and switch to green tea. With a little honey and cream. Was the best move I ever made.
How much coffee do you drink in a day?
If you are going to quit and you have a serious addiction to java then you need to step down off it. I started by mixing in decaf and caffenated a little at a time gradually until I was at all decaf. Hope this helps!
P.S. I still have a cup now and then. :-)
Sounds like you should take a little break.
Get really drunk the night before you quit coffee, then the next day you’ll already be hurting so coming off the coffee wont be so bad!! :)
Oh, and try Yerba Mate instead.
I was also a barista for several years and I drank a ton of coffee. Eventually I was in a position like you, obviously addicted. I weaned myself off and switched to tea, like @nocountry2 said. I feel a lot better. Moreover, when I drink coffee I get a nice boost from it because I’m sensitive to the caffeine again. So there’s a two-fold payoff: you’re no longer addicted, and you can actually enjoy the caffeine.
Hmm a gradual switch to decaf would probably be easiest at this point.
@nocountry – Cream in green tea? That’s odd.
@forest – I’ve tried Yerba Mate. It’s quite nice… Good suggestion!
@iron – Yeah, I’d like to feel caffeine once again. It’s kind of worn off. Not cool when you only drink the stuff to keep from being ill.
Mixing more and more decaf into your caf is definitely the best way to go – that’s how I weaned myself off caffeine after college (I was extremely addicted too – horrible headaches when I didn’t have my coffee – even now if I cheat and have a cup, I get a headache the next day…)
Also, broaden your drink horizons a little – if you have several cups of coffee a day, try switching one of them to tea, one to hot chocolate, one to a steamer. It wasn’t until after I stopped drinking coffee that I realized there were all these other tasty drinks I had totally forgotten about in my crazed need for caffeine! =)
@shadling – just a touch, or some milk….I’ve become very fond of honeyed, creamy green tea
Caffeine withdrawal is a difficult thing to beat. My daughter loved Mountain Dew when she was little. We also drank alot of sweet tea, being in the south. When I saw how much caffiene was in it, I decided it was time to decaffenate the entire family.
She got very ill at first because I made her go cold turkey. Her stomach bothered her, and she got horrible headaches. So I weaned her off, and it was much easier on her. I suggest you wean off as well. Here is some information about caffeine dependence and its effects on you.
@scamp – That is the very site I was consulting regarding my nausea! Great link.
@sdeutsch – I’ll try that. I like the idea of changing things up a bit.
@all:
Be proud of me! Today (Halloween) I ordered a decaf latte! I have had caffeine in other forms, though – chocolate, Pepsi, tea. But nothing as potent as coffee! I may survive yet.
@shadling21 good luck weaning off. I woke up way too late this morning and had to hurry to get to work on time, and I could use a huge cup of joe right about now!!
