Has anyone else seen this before? Do you find it amusing like I do?
Time and again, I have watched friends, co-workers, and complete strangers go into fast food restaurants and super-size, biggie size, etc. their meals and then they order a diet coke to go with it.
Do they honestly think that the diet coke they just ordered is going to somehow offset the 800 or 900 calorie nutritional disasters they just bought? Everytime I see this it just cracks me up.

Ha! I don’t think I have ever seen that before, but I usually don’t see what other people order; not to mention I usually only eat at Carel’s Jr., so most people there really aren’t watching their figures, or rather, they are watching their figures, becoming larger and more round, they are also watching it bounce off of the corners of tables and the seat of their own car.
I do find it amusing actually, especially considering that diet coke taste like hot piss.
I don’t necessarily biggie size…but I drink diet Coke.
1) Regular Coke is naueseatingly sweet and 2) why pack on the calories of the Coke if I don’t really prefer the taste…?
@Magnus Perhaps you should avoid drinking bodily waste.
@Magnus. Interesting. I would ask how you would know the taste of hot piss, but then I realize their may be a story associated with the answer and wish to forgo that, for I am eating, and wish to continue too ;)
What sort of carcinogen are they putting in diet sodas these days?
I always just assume it is because those people are accustomed to the taste of diet soda, not because they are watching their weight.
i see this ignorant practice all the time. yes, it cracks me up fer sure! all them food calories and a diet coke? PUH-LEEZE! but what the foodie thinks is this:
OK, i got a big salad with meat and cheese. what could be wrong with that? AND, i got, not one, but TWO packets of salad dressing. hey, i’m eating roughage—dude i’m eating healthy!
what a lot of people dont know is that eating whatever they want with a diet coke or trying to eat healthy with a diet coke is the reason they are still overweight.
no fad diets. no quickie gastro surgeries. the only way you can get good results is to cut down on sugar, fat, salt and sauces and exercise.
First of all, chacun a son gout. The reason seems obvious. if you are having a high-calorie meal why compound that with an additional nearly 400 empty calories?
McDonald’s Coke calories:
Jumbo (Super Size), 42 fl.oz. 385
McDonald’s Diet Coke:
Serving Size 42 fl oz. 0
@ Marina you beat me to it!
diet soda is just nasty. just give me a real coke, pepsi or RC. i’ll pay for it later.
just like people think margarine or “crock spread” is healthier, give me the damn butter. if i’m going to eat out of diet character, let me eat real stuff. real sugar. real fat. i’ll work it off in the short run and the long run.
hey marina!
I used to see this all the time at the theater. People would ask for extra “butter flavoring*” on their popcorn. And then they would ask for even more “butter flavoring”. And then they would ask for a large diet Coke.
*Management frowned upon calling it butter.
@Alfreda. Thanks for posting a link to that article. It was quite interesting.
Right, all soda is bad for you. Go for the milkshake.
Though I don’t supersize, when I do go to McD’s (not often), I usually get a tea or a Minute Maid Light Lemonade, because I’m diabetic and the carbs in food don’t push my blood sugar as high as quickly as do the carbs that come from high fructose corn syrup. Just one reason I suppose. The other, people who drink Diet sodas who I’ve met (my wife for one), just like it better…it’s one of those things, if you get used to the taste of diet soda, I’ve heard that regular soda just tastes too sweet. Now when I used to drink soda, I only drank regular soda and I thought diet soda tasted like poison, still do. And hey, you have to admit that say you order a Big Mac meal and upsize to a large fries and a large drink, you have 1350 calories if you get Coke and 1040 calories if you get Diet Coke (and that’s if you don’t get a refill…if you’re one of those people who can drink 3 or 4 sodas, you’ve doubled your calories). I guess bottom line is less calories is less calories. Those are the 3 reasons I can think.
But that said, yes, I laugh when I hear it!
Maybe they’re trying to cut down on high fructose corn syrup.
This is why I don’t drink soda… And I try to limit my fast food. :) Now no one can laugh at me!!! Hooray.
Don’t forget sugar. Diet sodas have sugar substitute while most regular sodas have around 40 something grams of sugar per 12oz can. I’m trying to gain mass while keeping my body fat percentage low so I’m taking in high amounts of calories and proteins while trying to give up all sugar. So if I went to a fast food restaurant, I could see myself doing something like that.
I just thought I’d mention that.
OH! And that scenario would also work for diabetics I believe.
Fat people drink diet sodas. Healthy people drink water.
@breedmitch. Nice theory. Doesn’t hold water.
What I really find ironic is when people order a diet soda, and say they eat healthy, salads etc, and then light up a smoke while they’re telling you this!!
Perhaps some of them are diabetic?
Absolutely I have! I will never forget my dad looking up at the menu and saying “I’ll have a big mac, large fri, quarter ppounder with cheese but gimme a TAB.” and then he would eat my sisters left overs.
Fortunately for me, I don’t like pop much. I usually go for tea or water when I eat out, no matter what food I’m eating, healthy or junk.
Diet and regular soda have two completely different tastes. Some people strongly prefer diet; others strongly prefer regular.
The people who strongly prefer diet don’t think, “OMG HAHA I AM GOING TO HAVE TO SUFFER THROUGH DRINKING A REGULAR SODA WHOSE TASTE I HATE SO I DONT LOOK WEIRD FOR HAVING ONE PART OF MY MEAL BE 0 CALORIES AND THE OTHER PART BEING 1000!!! GOD FORBID ANYONE BE WEIRDED OUT BY MY HALF DIET MEAL!”
I prefer the diet soda chemical taste, i don’t know why
I never understood the expression, empty calories. If they make you put on the pounds, then they have some food value.
