Doesn't it seem like the world is suddenly full of schizophrenics?

Asked by syz (36034points) November 3rd, 2008

When you’re in the store and there’s a guy talking to himself in the aisle, do you automatically assume the worst and move away? Or are you a bluetooth fan? Love’em or hate’em?

I mumble to myself all the time… and I’m not schizophrenic :)

No offense intended for those suffering from a mental illness

I love bluetooth headsets. Makes driving safer.

syz's avatar

Driving, yes. In private, yes. But walking around in public?

I see them all the time at work (a hotel), drives me bonkers. I’m supposed to offer assistance if someone looks lost or asks questions, generally they’re talking to someone else and are seemingly very annoyed at this wierd girl asking them if they need assistance. grr.

im afraid that everyone at school thinks im schizophrenic. i have long breaks between classes, so i just roam the halls sometimes, sometimes in circles. sometimes i mumble thing a little to loud, too. and the security guards stare at me whenever they see me.

syz, I’m sure you mean well but I’ve found that if you have to indicate “No offense intended for those suffering from a mental illness” than it’s usually offensive, whether you meant it or not.

Of course I’m not schizophrenic so maybe I’m just being contrary…?

I HATE BLUETOOTH HEADSETS. If your driving fine, thats great your being safe. But the second you step out of the car take that god damn thing off of your head, you look like an asshole.

The worst is when you respond to their hello before you realize they weren’t talking to you

@uberbatman: lurve to you… I almost peed laughing so hard. “Take that god damn thing off of your head, you look like an asshole.” lmao!

Sorry I don’t really get what that has to do with this question at all. Schizophrenia was just used as a simile for the odd behavior exhibited by Bluetooth users – I don’t think syz was actually asking why there were more schizophrenics in the world.

And even if he was asking that question, your last comment doesn’t even connect with that. Let’s leave the random flamethrower out of it.

Sorry, but the question asked if there are more schizos than before. The details were light, bluetooth is used in a lot of different applications not just phone. I was answering honestly. Why is the truth considered a flame?

El_Cadejo's avatar

Because it was off topic banter the question is clearly about blue tooth devices and phones as stated by the description and topics, you have no basis what so ever for your claims(please show me a legitimate study) and your just trying to bring up obama.
Thats how its considered a flame. Any other questions?

mstar80888's avatar

@uberbatman: there is no mention of phone in the details. If someone answers as if it were about phones or not that is their perogative. The details did not contain the word phone.

Blind or just illiterate?

you might want to read this as well

Edit:sorry syz for derailing, im done playing with the troll now :P

one more edit @mstar80888 no i wouldnt feel bad at all.

mstar80888's avatar

@uberbatman: That was my evil persona earlier, but I have the upperhand on it now. Please stop the vitriolic response. Wouldn’t you feel bad if I were really blind? Go play nice now.

I live in L.A., and people here have been talking to themselves for a few years now. The wife and I call these people borgs. I have to use one in my car (it’s the law), but I don’t even keep it on my ear. I swear I can feel a weird buzz in my ear when I have it on.

artificialard's avatar

I dislike them, mostly because it increases those incidences where you respond to someone you think is talking to you but they aren’t, and then you don’t know whether to just turn away like an idiot or actually try to talk to the person.

elenamillaa's avatar

personally, i think everyone is just going completely bonkers lately.

but yes, though the bluetooth thing is helpful for auto-related use, its is INSANELY annoying in public. and, to those who use it, no offense, but you really do come off as insane.

since when was holding up a phone a hassle?

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

Bluetooth devices are SO annoying. The first time I encountered someone using one, I was in the elevator with a friend and that person. I was pretty frightened to be around the person until my friend told me that she was just talking on their cell phone.

Aside from making people look stupid and crazy in public, Bluetooth (and cell phones in general) seem to be making people increasingly forget about a little thing called civility. Not to mention common sense. Talking on the phone while riding your bike, for example? Jeez.
