Is it still possible for me to use the iPhone without AT&T service?

Asked by nick2008 (15points) November 3rd, 2008

I read somewhere that AT&T is the sole service provider for the new iPhone 3G. I am planning to buy the iPhone but my current service provider is Verizon. I am happy with my service provider and do not want to change. Is it still possible for me to use the iPhone without AT&T service?

I think it would be best just to get an iPod touch. It’s exactly the same just without a phone, and there’s no need to jailbreak and unlock.

You could try buying an unlocked one from eBay, but I don’t think they have the 3G unlocked on there only the first generation iPhone.

The touch and the iPhone aren’t exactly the same. There is no camera, bluetooth or mic on the touch and most importantly(to me anyway) there is no external speaker on the touch.

They’re coming close to unlocking it. In the U.S., T-Mobile is your only other option for an unlocked iPhone. Verizon uses a totally different network that is incompatible with the iPhone.

you could use an older iPhone on different carrier but not 3g yet

There is a speaker on the touch. Go back to the Apple Store and see.

@PIXEL. The speakers are different. I have both. My touch only has a pizzo or whatever it’s called to produce a small range of sound for alarms and clicks etc. I cannot listen to audio from video or music without the earbuds on my touch like I can on the iPhone.

Maybe there is a new generation of touch out with speakers built in like the iPhone.

@tekn0lust, the new iPod Touch has a built in speaker much like the iPhone. The old one only had the limited speaker for blips and beeps.
