Adults who have had tonsils removed?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) November 5th, 2008

How long did it take you to heal (adults only) after you had your tonsils removed? Today is the sixth day after surgery and I can’t even talk yet. Do not get me started on how impossible it is for me to eat, still.

I’m starting to get worried because I only took ten days off of work (doctor recommended), but if I can’t even talk by the sixth day, that doesn’t bode well, does it?

It just doesn’t seem like my healing is progressing at all. The pain is about the same and I’ve already dropped about twelve pounds in these last six days. I’m kind of worried about how much more I’m going to lose until I can start eating again. :(

It does take longer with adults. My youngest had hers out a year and a half ago, and it took her about 8 days before the pain went away and she was able to not take the liquid pain medication. Have you had your follow up with the doctor yet? May want to check for an infection, which would slow healing.

I have heard that this is a particularly painful and long-healing operation for adults. But it sounds like you may be through the worst of it. Good luck.

my wife had this done at age 32. She was nearly on her back for two weeks.

I had mine out when I was 20. My 10 year old sister had them removed the same summer and she recovered in 3 days. It took me about ten. It was terribly painful and I only used Tylenol because the narcotics made me vomit.
To be honest, I felt miserable and then by day 10 I was just better…it was more sudden than I expected. Take it easy and drink plenty of water.
Also, my life has been so much better without tonsils. I rarely get sick now. You won’t regret it.
