What's the best dog breed for the new presidential first family?
in his acceptance speech, obama said his daughters have deserved “that new puppy.” WOW! is that all they want? absolutely adorable. but if you had a choice in the white house, what breed of dog would you choose? what is best for such a huge house? or kids? or, well, “first” children as far as tuesday night’s outcome?

Pembroke Welsh Corgi! But then, I’d say that for everybody. Really though, they’re excellent with kids and super playful.
A pitbull that wears lipstick!
just kidding
A Lab or golden retriever…they just seem so “American” to me. I have no idea why!
They so need a pug just like Jack! Or maybe a First Cat – not unlike Milo!
and english pitbull!! or rotweiler.
Having a maltese myself, I can go with nothing else. She’s fourteen and still acts the EXACT same way she did as a puppy, and looks almost identical to boot. I got her when I was eight and she is everything to me.
But I like TheHaight’s suggestion, adorable.
asmonet! I have a maltese, and he’s 16 years old. An amazing dog! and still truckin’ despite his age as well!!!!
damn! what are feeding him?
@TheHaight: Win! Aren’t they amazing? You can’t explain a sweet Maltese personality, you just gotta get one, they’re dorky, smart, silly, and just puppies forever. Apparently, they’re famous for acting like puppies throughout their rather long lives. She looks a little funny though…We keep her coat short, no one ever guesses she’s one of those poofy lap dogs, they all think she’s a very cute albino puppy or something. :D
@thehaight where did you get a pic of my dog?
lol
@asmonet: Yes, we keep “Sir Francis Drakes” (my grandmother named him that, I have no idea why) coat short as well. He is so dorky as well, not too sharp but very loving still. He’s going through a lot right now and has been through a lot- he had to get hip replacement surgery because he got hit by a car, several tumors removed, teeth pulled etc… but he still loves life! I don’t know how he does it…
@chyna: you own a dog like him? I am jealous. I’ve always wanted one..
@thehaight: Our dog’s would be total BFFs. You don’t even know.
A mutt with a waggly tail from the pound or a rescue dog if it must be pure-bred for some reason.
I agree on the mutt thing. I have no idea what my dog is. He looks like a lhasa/corgi, but he is the best dog ever. He came housebroken which is a plus. He loves other dogs and cats and people. His name is banjobama. I was just banjo for a while:)
@thehaight yes and he is spoiled rotten.
i say golden retriever. hands down.
@Supermouse; Milo asked me to tell you (and this is a direct quote), “If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve.”
He’s got bigger fish to fry… like keeping Gail guessing exactly where she’ll find him next.
I read an article about this earlier. I want something with a “doodle” suffix. They’re all pretty cute.
Robo-Dog with Laser Upgrades. Good defense, good offense, and you don’t need to feed it, however, if they get the Japanese version, they do have to clean up after it… Thus teaching them responsibility and the effects of battery acid on the human body. All very important lessons for the “First Children” to learn.
Golden retriever? Labradoodle? Boston terrier? Cocker spaniel?
Oh they’re all great – I want one of each.
And won’t it be fun to have a family in the White House again?
I am partial to German Shepherds. They are so intelligent and so loyal. I’ve had two, and both have been really special friends. Other dogs I especially like and have had great experience with are Labs, Golden Retrievers, and Standard Poodles.
Of course, a mix of any of these breeds would make a wonderful pet, too.
Congratulations to Malia and Sasha for making a new friend. You have many years of pleasure in store for you.
Why does it have to be a dog? Here’s a vote for first hedgehog! mind the pointy bits!
I didn’t think to remember which of the girls, but just read an article about the great puppy/dog search that notes that one of the girls has allergies, so that will be factored into whatever breed they might focus on.
bush could stay on as the family dog
Oh – how about a Benjie-type dog? A big furry mutt (but maybe not so good for the allergies). Labradoodles are hypo-allergenic.
Obama mentioned getting his daughters a puppy when all this was over no matter the outcome during the primary season, so i have given this a lot of thought and i would have to say a Lab, hands down, great with kids smart lovable adorable and pretty
That family is so darn attractive. It has to be a weimereiner.
@ breed: Um…have you seen the ears in that family?
@Knot awwwwwwwwwwwww.
keep that dog away from LBJ like people!
weimereiner’s arent good dogs for or with kids, i like the dog with the ears.
@Knot; I love the ears; I like the dog too.
considering the allergy problem, i’d say an italian greyhound or an american hairless terrier.
I think the majority of posts here are disregarding the fact that the dog must be a hypoallergenic breed. So that rules out: Corgis, German Shepards, Labs, Beagles, Rots, Weimereiners, Pits, Collies, Jacks, Pugs, and mutts (unless somehow they get lucky and find a mutt who doesn’t shed…),etc. I personally vote for a Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Kerry Blue, or some type of poodle mix (but the family would have to be careful with breeding to get a mix which obtains the non-shedding component of the breed).
Has anyone else seen the cover of the December 8 New Yorker? It’s absolutely adorable. President-elect Obama is sitting in a room in the White House interviewing a beagle on a chair in front of him while a line of other dogs waits outside the door. The cover is called “Vetting.” Since it combines two of my favorites – dogs and Obama – I love it. I think I’m going to frame it!
@janbb, Yes, I love that cover! As a dog lover, I wouldn’t mind having a framed copy.
@ tabby – Maybe we should get them to print it up?
@janbb, I’d be all for that!
