Do I need to get virus software for my mac?

Asked by kfingerman (1012points) November 5th, 2008

Just made the Mac switch. New Macbook Pro. It’s sweet. I hear all about how nobody writes viruses for macs, blah blah blah. I always had virus protection for my PCs. Do I really not need anything?

not really. macs are only a small percent of the computer world.

No one bothers to write viruses – yet. There aren’t many out there for you to worry about, but you just wait. One day, a virus is going to sweep all of Mac-dom, the most readily hackable OS with the least virus protection.

What about if I’m also running Windows through Parallels? Perhaps it I never go online from the PC “side?”

jividenm's avatar

nope, there are no viruses for macs :)

No. Been running internet connected Macs for over 10 years without virus protection and never had a problem.

long answer: no.

Yes on the virus protection for Windows in Parallels. Windows is still Windows and can still get infected – but it can’t “spread” to the Mac.
