What do you think about National Security Letters?
A provision of the Patriot Act is the ability for the CIA, FBI, etc. to issue an administrative subpeona and request information about you from just about anywhere if you are considered a “security risk” (nothing has to be done to prove you are a security risk.) There is a gag order associated with the letter; the person receiving the letter cannot tell anyone they received a letter, cannot refuse to turn over the information, and cannot even consult an attorney about refusing to provide the information. All due process is stripped away; there is no court order associated with the issuance of the letter.
Do you think government agencies should be be exempt from due process.?

This is a bit late, eh?
I think in theory, it would seem like you’re protecting your people. In practice, you’re violating them. It’s like bombing New York if it would save the world, or at least it seems like the same mentality.
I think government agencies should be held responsible for their reckless and abusive behaviors such as what was described in your questions details and I do not think they should be exempt from due process. I personally find it highly offensive that our government can take advantage of people and usurp their rights to privacy on a whim whenever they want to.
There is much not to like about the Patriot Act and it’s also no secret that our government has run roughshod over the Constitution through the years and the rights that it guarantees us have been dwindling ever since.
No, and I think I would still tell somebody and get some kind of protection. I think the “Patriot” Act is unneccesary control. I don’t know if Bush wants it to look like he’s actually doing something or what, but this needs to stop.
Our rights have been trampled on for long enough, and with no great outcry. It is Big Brother crap, and I sincerely hope it changes after Obama’s in office.
