Do you think we're being watched?

Asked by krose1223 (3274points) November 8th, 2008

As many opionions as there are on Fluther, usually pretty harsh ones about President Dumbo do you think anyone taps in “using” the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act?

What if some poor Flutherian made a joke in the past and is now tied up in a cold, dark place with a light in his or her face being interrigated?

So sad.

No. It’s not China. You’re allowed to say bad things about those in power.

No, I think they have better things to do than watch me.

My phone was tapped after 9/11, so yes, I do think there is always some sort of surveillance.

@AlfredaPrufrock How did you know? Just curious…

For two weeks, every time I used my land line, I would pick up the handset, get this really funny sound that I could only describe as metallic, I would dial the number, get as series of clicks, then the number would start to ring. Never happened before, stopped after two weeks.

In all fairness, my nephew took a “For $20,000 you, too, can learn to fly a 747” course in attempt to position himself for a position with a certain airline. (He is a commercial pilot), and my husband, because of the nature of his work, only flies multiple one way segments (Leave City A, City B, City C, City D, Return to City A) each week. There were one or two other things going on as well, that added together, our household fit a “profile”. It alarmed me at first, but really didn’t bother me.

I think the ability to filter and monitor is there, built into things we do—phones, especially cell phones, the Internet, all of it, has a certain level of watchfulness with triggers in place that key words or strings of words cause to bubble up to the surface. It has nothing to do with George Bush, or really any administration.

Just look at what Richardhenry was able to do with Cursebird

I am sure that all internet activity is already being filtered and with the improvements in voice recognition and translation software all phone activity is moving that direction. The real challenge for the government is the monitoring part of all those feeds.

It doesn’t phase me much because growing up, I already had the idea that Santa was watching my every move and knew when I was sleeping and knew when I was awake.

Uncle Sam is just Santa in a different costume.

if marketers can follow what and where your surfing on the internet to predict buying habits, then you bet the government can watch what you post and what your saying.
