Importing mail on a Mac?

Asked by omfgTALIjustIMDu (9293points) November 9th, 2008

I just got a new Mac and want to transfer my Mail account (with all the messages and keeping everything exactly as it is on the old computer) from my old Mac. Is there any way to do this? My dad tried but I ended up with about 35 different folders and I have no idea what’s what and I can’t find anything.

It did it automatically for me when I got a new mac. What mail provider do you use?

You can drag them one by one into a folder then drag them back into mail account on your new computer. But you cant drag them all out at once so it can take a while.

Or if you right click on the mailbox on the left panel you can click archive. This saves a .mbox file which can be opened in mail!

@melonking: Mail (mac’s email thing).

@joey: What?

In Mail, click on an E-mail then drag it onto your desktop. It will create a file on the desktop. Put these files on a thumb drive or something then drag them back into mail on the new computer.

I think Melonking means do you use Gmail, Yahoo Mail, etc. Mail on Mac is just a way to look at mail, not a mail provider.

Or go to users/xxxx/Library/Mail/(Your account here)/inbox.mbox

You’ll see a folder called messages this has all your messages in it.

Hmm you might have a bit of trouble with yahoo, its one of those one that is ant relay very compatible with mac. Gmail you might stand a chance and .mac it will do it auto. Yahoo I would be surprised if you can get it from the host, I tried to copy the file from an old comp once, you can problem do it but I would say take both Macs into am atmac store (or what ever you call them where you live) and get them to do it.

so you go -> macintosh HD -> (your username, i.e. your home folder) -> library -> mail
-> and you’ll see a folder, mines POP-xxxxxxx@pop.gmail.com (yours could be pop-tali@pop.yahoo.com) go into this folder then inbox.mbox then messages.

When you have your inbox selected on your old mac, click “Mailbox” in the menubar, then click “Archive Mailbox…”. Save the file it creates on to a memory stick or a CD, then copy it over to your new computer.
Once you’re at your new computer, open mail and click “File” in the menubar, then “Import Mailboxes…”. From the options presented, click “Mail for Mac OSX”. It will then ask you to locate the file you created earlier. Once you have chosen it, all your emails will be imported.

Once you’ve copied over your files, you’ll still have to set up Mail with your Yahoo account to get any new emails you receive, if you haven’t already done so. If you haven’t done this, just go to “File” and then click “Add Account…”, and follow the wizard. It’s really easy to follow so you shouldn’t have any problems. If you do, have a look at Yahoo’s help page on POP.
