A good meaty read.

@skfinkel: as usual, you and I are, literally, on the same page. That was wonderful, readable and well-researched.

Lovely article. I almost cried again. I still can’t quite believe we did it : )

horrible article. i love how we are making such wild predictions before he has even taken office

augustlan's avatar

@waterskier: What predictions? The article was all about the election of Obama, which is a fact. I didn’t see any predictions of what he will do, but evidence of what we (the majority of Americans) did.

oh idk maybe the line “Dawn also brought the realization that we were at last emerging from an abusive relationship with our country’s 21st-century leaders”. there are other lines in there that are implying the same thing

augustlan's avatar

I think an argument could be made that we are emerging from just that. That statement does not mention what we are entering into. That remains to be seen.

Waterskier, we have plenty of time to be discouraged – it’s going to be a hard go.
For now, why not be grateful for what we’ve achieved – not necessarily a brave new world, but certainly the end of a hard, hard time.

Great article as usual. The Times has had a number of them this week, not surprisingly. I particuarly like Maureen Dowd’s about the monuments in Washington regaining their lost lustre, and Nick Kristof’s about it being safe for an intellectual to be elected again.

@susan, you say that as though i would want obama as our president when that is clearly not the case

@skfinkel, Gail, Susan and augustlan – I thought it was a great article for exactly the same reasons.

One would have to force interpretation viewing it with sour grapes to see it as anything else.

Waterskier you may be 19 but your grumbling could earn you an AARP card. Your right up there with the group in Washington who are already holding their collective breaths in a fit, despite McCain’s gracious acceptance of defeat.

i dont see how my opinion makes me old. and im not grumbling, i just dont like how the press is acting like we are out of this “turmoil” when obama hasn’t taken presidency

When I was young we would go on a two week vacation as a family and take my Grandma with us. As a tradition, when we backed out of our driveway we would all yell, on what was amazingly enough always a beautiful day, “here comes the best vacation ever”.

My Grandma would always say “Ah, but before you know it, it will be over.”

Its the concept of suggesting that an optimistic outlook is also blind to what negative things may happen or are happening.

I would suggest that is how your opinion makes you old. You don’t like him as your president. You refuse to support him even though he is. And consarn it, you don’t like anyone who gets their hopes up about things getting better.

O waterskier O waterskier
You are young but you are grumpy
Why should we criticize you for being grumpy?
You may be grumpy
It’s fine
It sounds like you do not want this president
That is fair enough
It also sounds like you are angry that we like him already
Even though he has not done anything yet
It sounds like you’re ready for him to do some good things
And are impatient for it to begin.
Hey me too darlin.
