How do you let go of the reins in your life?
I’m going through several different situations at the moment, where uncertainty and the unknown are two of the biggest factors. I do not handle these well. I feel like I need to think and think and think and think until I have a plan for every single possible (and some impossible) scenario that could occur. It’s become so natural for me that now I’m pretty sure I have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder.
Everyone in my life keeps telling me that it’s a completely unrealistic way of coping, and I know that. I just can’t stop.
Aside from a therapist, which I’m working on (try finding a good, trustworthy therapist with your ho-hum insurance!) has anyone discovered any techniques that work for them to just let things work their course naturally?

Idk if the second relates as much…
maybe that will help?
My father is similar in many ways. He relaxes on vacations, although it takes at least 3 days for him to finally unwind. I guess I would recommend a break from everything. Go somewhere you enjoy and can relax. It might take a while to get there, but just let it happen. Go ahead and think, but take in your environment, relax, maybe read something.
I tend to try to escape. This can take some more or less healthy forms. I might go on a bike ride, or hiking in the hills, if that was available. I might watch a lot of TV or do Fluther. The point being to stop myself from thinking in the left brain, and move over to the right brain.
If you get out of linguistic thinking into non-linguistic thinking, you really can’t think about it in a worrisome way. Most things we worry about are things we can only think about in words. They are symbol driven.
The advantage of physical activity is that if you tire yourself out, you may also be able to sleep. Good luck!
Let me therapitize you…
You are channeling a lot of energy into needless worry. The unknown is obviously a stressor for you. The energy that this creates within you does not have to manifest itself as muddled thinking. Try to keep yourself busy and distracted; do not let yourself ruminate on the “what ifs?”. When it becomes hard to distract your thoughts, try to soothe yourself; using your senses, find things that calm and relax you: the scent of lavender, good music, a hot bath, etc. A good way to prepare for change (which I love by the way) is to think about the good outcomes, the possibilities. Does your new life require a new wardrobe, or some new furniture? Start window shopping a.k.a. web searching. Change is a part of life; knowing how to handle it will make your life more manageable—and isn’t that what you’re really looking for?
And remember, thoughts are things; the more energy we give to them, the more powerful they become.
Xanax…The Wonder Drug : )
find a solution to the problem. Forget about the problem. Deal with it with the solution you made when time comes.
Do something really cool and just for you!
