Surprisingly, a large number of premade meals are also loaded with iron, though wouldn’t qualify them all as being good for you.

We have to watch my husband’s iron intake, so I’m always reading labels and trying to avoid anything related to the 4 groups I listed above.

@mamasu—why does he need to limit his iron?

asmonet's avatar

@emilyrose: He might have a number of conditions like my brother. I don’t know the specifics… but I know my brother had to get blood drawn regularly for a while.

When one of my sons was anemic, the doctor told me to buy a cast iron skillet and use it to fry up his eggs.

@emilyrose – for some reason, his body absorbs and doesn’t release iron. They’ve done a million tests and only managed to rule out everything they thought it might be. We aren’t sure why, but he has to the hematologist/oncologist about every 3 months to get his numbers checked. So far, we’ve been able to keep it in check with diet.

@mamasu—best wishes to him! it sounds like you guys are doing a good job keeping it under control. i’ll eat the iron that he doesn’t ; )

@emilyrose. Thank you. It was worrisome at first. Now it’s just routine. You can have the extra iron, LOL. The more he progresses with this, the more I realize I just don’t like meat. He’s a steak and potatoes guy, so the dietary changes are much harder for him.

Try liver pills. You can get them on Amazon. They have the fat taken out and don’t taste bad. I have pernicious anemia and just can’t do liver.

Blackstrap Molasses has 20% iron per serving (1 Tablespoon). Oh and don’t forget the vitamin C! It will help your body absorb more iron.
