You could probably call it a motel if you only had one room for rent.

Why do you want to know?

I imagine you’re planning on opening one or complaining about one that exists? If that’s the case, how many rooms it has is really not that big a concern I would think. I suggest you go to the library and ask for help looking up some of your local laws on the subject if there is a minimum it’s probably on record somewhere, try calling a lawyer who handles those kinds of businesses if you have specific questions, last ditch effort might be to call some motels and speak to the management as a curious consumer. I work in a hotel and I get lots of odd questions about sizes and such.

Then again, maybe you’re curious about a ‘motel’ you saw advertising only a few rooms and wanted to check what is considered the norm… in that case, I have no idea. But ‘four’ seems like a good guess to me – it’s the lowest number I’ve seen.

Also, ‘least’ refers to the size, degree or positon of something, not the amount. Perhaps saying the ‘lowest number’ or asking ‘how many’ as in your title question would have been a better choice. :P

fewest: The traditional rule holds that fewer should be used for things that can be counted (fewer than four players), while less should be used with mass terms for things of measurable extent (less paper; less than a gallon of paint).

Motel refers to “Motor Hotel” which in the olden days meant you could drive your car up to your door. Therefore, I would say that a motel could have as little as one room as long as it had an outside entrance up to which you could drive.

I wanted to know the minimum number of rooms a motel can have because I’m writing a short story which takes place in a motel. The small, creepy type. I’m a creative writing major, and have to write a story to get into grad school. I appreciate everyone’s input. If you have anything extra to add, please do.

Check out Psycho again and forget the shower scene. Pay attention to the motel. The Bates Motel. Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins.

In order to be a motel and not a home with a room for rent, you need to do something legal, like become a small business.

@Link: it’s fiction—what matters is not whether it’s true but whether it’s plausible.

Can you think of a motel with fewer than two rooms for rent? fewer than four? fewer than six? fewer than eight?
