Moving to Brooklyn, NY! How hard is it to find a rental?

Asked by nojo1212 (5points) November 15th, 2008

My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to the williamsburg area in brooklyn. I have been looking at listings on the internet, and found a bunch of really nice places. My credit isnt so great, and my girlfriend doesnt have established credit as of yet. She models and does make a good living, and theres paperwork to prove it. I also have a steady job (close to 4 years), and pay stubs to prove that I am making twice the rent amount. With our combined income, the rent is definately not a problem for us. Most places I’ve seen state that good credit is a must, but if we
were willing to pay the first, last, security and a few months in advance would the whole good credit obstacle be able to be bypassed?

I have no clue. When you find out, let me know. I want to move to a nice spot in one of the Burroughs, let me know!

I imagine that you won’t have to pay the first few months in advance.

If that doesn’t seem like an issue to you, then I would suggest contacting a Realtor in the area and paying their fee. It will be a much quicker and more focused search than trying to do it on your own.

It’s really so different from place to place. I lived in NYC for 11 years and Bklyn for 4 of those. I never had to clear a credit check there, but when I moved to Philly I did, so it seems maybe many landlords are doing that now. Also, the time I did have to do a credit check, well… actually every time I’ve rented, I STILL had to pay the first and last months, plus one month security (or even two). Maybe it would be different with a Realtor as the other person suggested, because then maybe you’d only have to jump thru all those hoops once. But, whatever you do, use a VERY well-known Realtor, and don’t be tempted to do something that’s not totally legitimate because of your credit. There are lots of scammers so don’t offer any information about yourself unless you really need to and it’s for sure legit! Good Luck!
