Do you give your coworkers Christmas presents?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 17th, 2008

what do you give your coworkers for Christmas? do you give the same gift to each person or buy something totally different for each? what’s the limit on what you spend?

I am thinking about this as the holidays approach…...

Christmas cookies….works every time….and I don’t spend all that much making ‘em. And if someone doesn’t want ‘em then more for me….win-win situation ;-)

I can’t decide if I should or not this year. I would bake a bunch and give that out if I was going to, but I’m in an odd situation where I don’t have exact co-workers.

My department is hundreds of people big so I don’t feel obligated. I do, however, do something for my staff. This year they have told me they prefer to just have a pot luck meal. I’ll provide the entree and they will bring side dishes. They are letting me offcthe hook easy on this one.

I used to, but I found that it started to get politically complicated. Over the past few years I’ve just given baked goods with a really nice copy of the recipe (gift-tag style) attached to the package. I’ve made egg-nog bread, a collection of cookies, or wine cake, and they’ve all been big hits.

Going out to a festive lunch, high tea, or after-work drinks is also a good way to celebrate, without feeling compelled to buy gifts. In the event of a Christmas gift exchange, I wind up getting a really nice candle in a holiday scent, an assortment of holiday tea, or a funny gift for their desk if they’ve got a good sense of humor. ThinkGeek has some fun items. For general cost, I usually stick to $15.00 or less.

I donate to Heifer Int’l and “buy” an animal. Then I make copies of the certificate that says the animal was bought in all their names, and give one to each co worker. I roll the paper up in a scroll and tie with a pretty ribbon. They all love it!

We have Secret Santa, so yes.

I also bake my world famous cinnamon spice apple pie from scratch and my famous cookies. I refuse to attach a copy of the recipe. :)

I’m retired now, but we always played the gift exchange game. We set a limit (it was up to about 25 bucks a couple of years ago) and each person brings a wrapped gift and puts it in the conference room. We plan a little party and pick numbers. Number 1 goes first and chooses any gift on the table. #2 can either steal that gift or choose another one. # 3 can steal any already opened gift or choose another one…..
We decided that in the interest of time, each gift could only be stolen 3 times then it was frozen. This gift game is a blast and can get quite lightheartedly vicious!

@Judi: grrr! I guess at work people are forced to keep some composure and not embarass themselves, but it’s still a suck game. :)

I’m bitter.

@asmonet;
When we play this with family we don’t draw numbers, we start with oldest to youngest. It’s great because different things appeal to different ages. It was really funny when grandma opened an airbrush tatoo kit!
