Why is peyote illegal if San Pedro isn't?
Along the same lines, why is weed illegal if salvia isn’t, which is far worse than weed? Is it one of those things where the U.S. government simply hasn’t realized these things are out there and very attainable?

First off saliva isnt worse than weed in any way, you just trip harder, but health speaking its the same. To answer your original question though San Pedro is still legal because it grows everywhere and really isnt looked at as a drug like peyotes are.
FYI T. peruvianus has about 10 times as much mescaline in it than San Pedro and is also legal.
Salvia is illegal in places in the US. Depends on where you are. But I get it, you mean nationally.
@uber: By “worse”, I wasn’t talking about health-wise, I was talking about how hard you trip. ;)
Why isn’t San Pedro viewed the same, though? I know peyote is generally a little more potent, but if you eat enough San Pedro you pretty much have the same effect, at least going by everything I’ve read.
I read about T. peruvianus in the last book I read, too. Peyote is actually legal in four states – mine one of them – as long as you don’t have so much on you that it looks like you’re going to deal it or would be unable to consume it in the near future. It also has to be for religious reasons (outside of the Native American culture, too) but how a court could ask you to prove something like that is beyond me.
I thought SP was basically viewed the same: you can grow it for decoration, but if they think you are going to consume it you get in trouble. (This answer supplemented by the Wikipedia article I just read since I had no idea was SP was.)
@Empress: No, it’s legal. Could be illegal in certain states now, but for the most part SP is still legal. I think most people don’t know this and I’m sure that’s how the government would like to keep it. It generally takes a long time for enough people in power to find out to actually make a change and outlaw it.
Yea, but you only trip for 5 minutes :P EmpressPixie said exactly why its not viewed the same. A lot of people grow it for decoration and it grows pretty fast, where as peyote is a very slow growing cactus. Besides most people know about peyotes even if they dont know about drugs, where as most people dont know that theres mescaline in San Pedros, just as they dont know of the LSA in morning glories and you see those flowers everywhere. ^_^
So basically I was pretty much right. It’s because the government hasn’t viewed them as threats because not a lot of people know these things. But as soon as more people find out, the government will probably have a higher interest in outlawing them, just like they’re starting to do with salvia. I definitely did not know that about Morning Glories – I don’t even know what LSA is.
Peyote is practically extinct now, which is a shame. Having nothing to do with the effects it can cause, it just shouldn’t be that close to extinction. Very sad.
Its close to extinct because of how slow it grows and it being illegal to grow. Its a shame really. But yes its because the majority of america isnt aware of it. Just like salvia as you mentioned a couple years back no one knew what it was. Then it go popular and states started outlawing it.
LSA is a naturally occurring psychedelic related to LSD but not as potent nor psychedelic. It can be found in morning glory and Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds and is quite easy to extract.
Wait! You mean, you can consume Salvia and get some kind of effect out of it!?
Besides, half the people who try Salvia don’t get anything out of it. LIke, smoking air.
And weed is illegal because of farmers.
@asmonet that would because they smoke it wrong. You cant smoke salvia like you smoke weed. If its still in leaf form you have to use a torch lighter to really get anything out of it, if its an extract thats not really a problem. The thing is most people smoke it like weed taking a hit every now and then. What you need to do is pack a bowl and try and smoke as much of it as you can in one hit by the time you exhale your usually gone. If not, try and get in another hit, then your definitely gone.
@uber: Incorrecto! It’s a fact it has no effect on some people. I ingested it in every form and tried every potency. It has no effect on me. None. Now, the interesting thing is people like that might try it after trying for ages and suddenly it will hit us, but people do exist that get nothing from it. Everyone’s body is different, you can’t say the method is the problem when it’s plain old biology.
poppycock! I know some people are effected less, but ive yet to meet someone who had no effect. Many ive met said they didnt get effects but then when i smoked with them it was their technique. Have you tried using extracts?
Personally i wouldnt go through all the trouble though, salvia isnt all that great anyway.
me thinks asmonet is already too high to get much higher
@fireside: it’s okay to be jealous.
@asmonet: are you sure it was salvia? I bought “salvia” from a guy once, but it turned out not to be salvia.
you can buy it online really really cheap. like 10 dollars a gram, i have no clue why headshops overcharge so much. They ask like 60 for 15x.
@pete: Yes, very, very sure. Different brands, different suppliers, different everything. I think altogether I’ve smoked twelve completely separate products at varying levels of potency from normal to 40x. Nada.
