In what directory this software installed?

Asked by kfingerman (1012points) November 19th, 2008

I am new to a mac. I need the serial number for some software I just installed and am told it’s in a file in the same directory where the software was installed. The software’s in my “applications” folder, but doesn’t have any separate files along with it. Are these somewhere else? Is the program stored somewhere else with a launch in the applications file?

Try looking in the mounted .dmg that you installed the app from. You may find something there. Also, you could try right clicking the app in Application folder and choosing “show package contents.” This will allow you to look inside the app, where the developer may have, albeit foolishly, placed the serial.

What app is it?

the “show package contents” trick was what I was looking for. Didn’t know how to do that in a mac. Nice that things are clean and user-friendly in macland but you got to know the tricks if you want to dig at all. Thanks. Oh, it’s MATLAB – math analysis software

Isn’t the serial number on the box or in an email if you downloaded it?

should have been one or the other, but wasn’t. I bought it from the company through a research institute and somehow missed out on both. It’s all worked out now though. I called them.
