Do I need a 2.5" hard drive enclosure? What type?

Asked by DandyDear711 (1512points) November 20th, 2008

My daughters clunky large screen HP laptop died a year ago. She wants to pull the hard drive out so she can rescue her music. Can I assume it is a 2.5” drive? Anything else I need to know to buy the correct enclosure? Will this one work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155704

I doubt she will use it much, BTW. Probably will be a one time use.

I have this and it works with pretty much any drive you throw at it.

The drive is 2.5” but it could be IDE or SATA. It is probably a IDE drive but it could be SATA. If it is IDE the enclosure you linked to should work. If it is SATA it won’t. But the enclosure is only 10$ so it isn’t much of a loss if it doesn’t.

What I linked to above will work with either, or any drive you need to use.

Looks good John. I think I’m gonna purchase one of those myself. I’m using rigged equipment to do half as much.

Thank! I am gonna go cheap, take a chance, and buy the IDE 2.5”. I bet she can find plenty of computer wizards at a school of 60,000 to help her.

If you’re just going to take the data off the drive and then not use the drive, buying an enclosure for it isn’t really necessary… if someone knows what they’re doing.

An enclosure is a great thing if you plan on using the old drive as an external hard drive. You would essentially be making your own version of a portable hard drive, like a WD passport

On the other hand if you only need to connect once to recover data, the cable John linked to is the perfect thing. I have one lying around to copy hard drives or connect to old hard drives.
