Can you help me learn to garden in Los Angeles?

Asked by kimigen (70points) November 20th, 2008

I just moved to LA from Seattle and I am interested in growing a few basic herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage and basil. Eventually I would like to move on to tomatoes, carrots, and other veggies and herbs. Where can I get information on how best to grow food in this hot desert climate?

Buy two books: Sunset’s Western Garden Book and Pat Welsh’s Southern California Gardening.

Highly recommended, perhaps even crucial!

You can also call some local greenhouses. They are the experts for your area, and can help you out with it. Hope this helps, happy gardening.

The best way to learn to garden and what to plant when is to talk to your neighbors. Gardeners love to share info and help beginners.
