Why are women always colder than men?

Asked by AstroChuck (37666points) November 21st, 2008

Okay, not always. But usually the woman seems to the one who is freezing. Perhaps women are just more sensitive to temperature than men. No?
Has anybody else noticed this or am I crazy?
Okay. I know that I’m crazy, but am I cra-zy?

I don’t know, but in my case it’s true. My feet are always freezing.

You’re not crazy as far as I’m concerned. My wife is constantly complaining about being cold (we live in Phoenix, Arizona where it doesn’t even get cold in the Winter really). She is orginally from Tononto, Canada too and it gets seriously cold there in the Winter.

As far as what gets cold, it is usually her hands (I think she has some poor circulation and they turn quite pale when they’re cold and I’ve felt them too during those times….Brrrrr).

My finger nails sometimes turn purple from being so cold and my husband says that the temp is just fine! So crazy. Check this out. BRR

It’s a trait evolved over time… cold ladies snuggle up with warm men to leech heat… snogging ensues… 9 months later… BABIES!!

Darwin wins again.

This is definitely true in my house. Dad’s always hot and me and my mom and sister are cold. I read in one of those random “bathroom reading” books (with the random facts and articles and such) that men are actually like.. 6 degrees warmer than women or something, I don’t remember exactly. and I can’t seem to find it again! but apparently it is some sort of fact

I don’t know why, and I can say it is definitely true in our house. I sleep all snuggled up in a cocoon, and my husband will be sleeping with his arms and legs hanging out, the covers half off him. I don’t know how he sleeps that way.

Theory #1: Women tend to be smaller (and curvier), hence lower mass-to-surface-area ratio, hence less efficient at retaining heat.

Theory #2: They are just saying that because you aren’t hugging them often enough.

Theory #3: When men are cold, they are more likely than women to stop themselves expressing it for various reasons (macho complex, real men don’t whine about being cold, etc.).

Theory #4: You tend to hang out with women from warmer climates than you are used to yourself. Try dating women from Iceland, etc.

wait til that woman reaches menopause…........her thermostat will kick into high gear.

I’d wager it’s because we’re smaller and almost all of us are anemic to some degree, which can lower body temperatures. That being said, I’m one of the few that almost never complains about cold and I am anemic. No big. :) Not to mention there’s that whole pressure in society for women to always be the smaller of the half of a couple. Being thin from watching your weight doesn’t really allow for a protective lyer of body fat.

@uber, Me too which always seemed crazy to me. I’m usually colder than most of the women!

Sorry Chuck. You may be crazy (at least by my family).

Always hot: Me and my daughter

Always freezing: My wife and my nephew

So we’re split 50/50 by gender

maybe men are still cold but dont show it as to them is a sign of weakness??? dunno lol

See, I’m the one in my family who’s always hot—my hands are often warm enough that they hurt, while my boyfriend’s are freezing cold. I haven’t personally witnessed this women-colder-than-men thing; frankly, it seems that as there are a lot of skinny males running around (at least near me!), they are usually the ones getting colder… my brother spends the winters huddled under blankets by the forced-air heater…

See, I’m not even sure it’s a weight thing.

My wife and I are equally porky, but she’s always cold while I am hot.

My nephew and daughter are thin as rails, but he’s always cold while she is hot.

It appears to be more about circulation than anything else.

in my house I am always hot, and my husband is freezing. It’s a hormonal thing for me. The plus is that he can snuggle up with me and keep warm. I am his personal heater .

Men have, in general, a faster metabolism. (Witness that men are supposed to eat more calories each day.) Those calories are burned and released as heat.

Actually, women are better at conserving heat than men. When you feel cold, it’s often because your hands or feet are cold – women have a more even fat layer than men, and are able to pull their blood away from the exterior to warm internal organs – but when their bodies do this, there is less blood circulating near the skin in hands, feet, etc. thus making women feel colder.
