Australia allows gays in the military
The UK does not discriminate on grounds of sexual preference either for marriage or military service.
The Netherlands were the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Since then same-sex marriage is now allowed in Belgium, Canada, Norway, and in two (maybe three, as there is still confusion over this in California) US states, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Although a same-sex couple can’t get legally married in Israel, they do recognize marriage performed in other countries where it is legal.
Interestingly enough, towards the end of the Roman empire both emperors Constantius and Constans declared same-sex marriage to be legal.
As to gays in military service, I believe all nations in the EU are required to accept them. Some of the nations outside of the EU that allow gays to serve are Israel, Japan, and Australia. I’m sure many others, as well. I figure that President Obama will likely make an edict allowing self-proclaimed homosexuals in the US armed forces.
America and America.
The first one is controversial to some even though I have no problem with it.
The second one is called “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”
This is from Wikipedia:
Countries that allow full same-sex marraige the info bar on the right
-Belgium
-Canada
-Netherlands
-Norway (starting from 2009)
-South Africa
-Spain
But it’s not necessarily a yes/no for each country. Some countries allow civil unions that are de facto marraiges (but not classified as marraige) while other countries have regional variances (like only MA in the US allowing gay marraige) and yet other countries recognising foreign same-sex marraiges but not granting it locally.
Countries that explicitly ban homosexuals from the military:
* Brazil
* China
* Cuba
* Egypt
* Greece
* Iran
* Malaysia
* Mexico
* North Korea
* Philippines
* Saudi Arabia
* Singapore
* South Korea
* Syria
* Turkey
* Venezuela
* Yemen
Both the US and Russia have similar Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policies. I imagine many other countries are somewhere in-between; they do allow gays to serve but implicitly ask that they restrict the expression homosexuality.
@ astrochuck and artificalard:
