Spectacular Stuffing Recipie?

Asked by bythebay (8214points) November 23rd, 2008

Ok, I’m tired of the same old bread cubes, stock & herbs…does anyone have a recipie they would be willing to share? I did see the White Castle mention in another thread…not exactly what I was thinking of! :) BTW, I would be cooking the stuffing seperate from the turkey. Thanks!

I don’t have a recipe on hand but recently have really enjoyed cornbread stuffing. I’m sure you can google a really good one.

I’ve made this one several times and I literally can’t make enough of it. It’s spectacular, and my guests have always raved about it. One tip though: It calls for panettone (a sweet bread), but instead of all panettone, I make half with sourdough to balance the sweetness.

Amazing.

I usually make cornbread, with mild sausage, lots of celery and onion.

I make a decent stuffing, with white and wheat bread, add the broth, but I heat it first, and add sage, fresh garlic, onion, celery, pepper, basil, oregano, poultry seasoning, diced mushrooms, fresh cranberries, and sometimes diced raisins. Makes for a good flavor. Hope this helps.

I don’t know if this is different enough for you, but I usually add into the basic stuffing apples, mushrooms, lemons, and other seasonal foods, which makes it delicious. Also lots and lots of butter.

Oh, yes, a lot of butter in the stuffing, makes for a great smooth flavor. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Ok, I cheat. My mother makes wonderful stuffing and I couldn’t ever make any to taste as good. Finally I asked for her recipe and she sheepishly told me it was stove top. The secret is to saute extra onion and celery in the butter before you add the water and bread cubes. Also, to fool everyone, I dry some extra bread and cut it in larger cubes than the stove top bread and add it to the stuffing along with some extra turkey broth that I make out of the giblets. The odd sized bread cubes give it a more homemade appearance. People ask me for the recipe all the time and I say it’s my mothers secret recipe. Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone!

Apple Stuffing

2 cups chopped onions
2 cups chopped celery
1 cup butter
4 cups apples, peeled, cored and chopped
6 cups croutons
6 cups dry bread crumbs
1 tablespoon ground sage
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper

Preheat oven to 350*F.
In a skillet, saute chopped onions and chopped celery in butter for 3 minutes. Add chopped apples, croutons, dry bread crumbs, sage, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.
Bake in a baking dish for 30 minutes, or use as a stuffing

It comes in a box marked “Stove Top Stuffing”. It’s pretty good and I get a lot of it from Salvation Army for 50 cents a box. The local SA store has a “scratch & dent” grocery section. I have never tried any other kind.
