Has he ever been dropped?

From a considerable height?

jessturtle23's avatar

He may be hearing a critter in your wall that you can’t hear.

babiturtle36's avatar

I don’t have an actual answer, but my dog does that too. Stares at the wall for no reason. I always think that its my relatives that have pasted away and they have come to visit and he can see them walking or floating around. I don’t know. Maybe I’m crazy too. :)

campbell's avatar

I know we are not crazy. I know we do not have critters in our walls and no our dog was not dropped. When the dog acts like this you just know he is seeing something. The way he stares and runs around staring up crying and making noises not barking though. He gets on top of the back of the furniture to try and get closer to what he is seeing. He will also do this when I am in the bedroom sitting on the bed. It usually happens when I am in the room. This will go on for several minutes. I too have lost family members. My brother two years ago. My grandmother and my mother a few years back. I also have been overwhelmed by emotion and cried right after this went on.

asmonet's avatar

I mean no offense by this, but I don’t know how to phrase it, are you sure you don’t just have a mouse or a roach in the wall and because of your recent loss you’re more inclined to attribute a dog’s behavior this way? Maybe you’re letting the dog’s behavior act as catalyst to deal with the emotions left over from the trauma. The fact that you were “have been overwhelmed by emotion and cried right after this went on” suggests to me at least that this is the case. Some dog’s are just weird. Maybe he just likes looking at the area or has an eye defect he notices when looking at the big blank area.

campbell's avatar

No but thank you. No bugs here. No eye defects. It has been several years for my loss. This dog is seeing something. My husband my other brother mself and our daughter have all seen this dog do this. It is not all the time only once or twice a week maybe. We really think he is seeing a ghost. I really need more information on paranormal with regards to this animals behavior.

jessturtle23's avatar

Why would a ghost chill on the ceiling over your couch? My dog can sniff out moles in the ground and I can’t see or hear them. I’m sure it’s a mouse or a squirrel.

asmonet's avatar

Nothing related to ghosts has ever been scientifically proven, you’d think it would have been by now considering the effort that’s been put into achieving it. I honestly just think you have a silly dog. But if you believe it’s a loved one, take comfort in it as you can, don’t worry about. I won’t rain on your parade. :)

But if you start speaking in tongues – get the fuck out. :D

To answer your original question though, no. No one knows, because it hasn’t been proven to even exist.

campbell's avatar

ok then I will be on my way. this is not the kind of feed back I’d thought I would get but thanks anyways.

jessturtle23's avatar

I bet it’s a mouse. You could probably find droppings somewhere.

asmonet's avatar

Oh, I’m sorry. I hope I haven’t soured your idea of Fluther. Honestly. Please stay. We’re kind of awesome. :)

jessturtle23's avatar

You could take a picture and see if there is an orb.

jessturtle23's avatar

I think you hurt her feelings.

jessturtle23's avatar

I still think it’s a mouse though.

asmonet's avatar

Me too. Hell, I’ve caught my dog barking at the stairs. Dogs are retarded. Lovable, but retarded.

my daughter cat is a cancer sniffer. My daughter had what she thought was a zit that just wouldn’t heal on her back. The cat kept licking it and meowing at it. Come to find out it was squamous cell (We hope, biopsy results this week.)

augustlan's avatar

One of my cats does this all the time, in the same spot in the kitchen. Never really considered it anything other than her being weird.

Judi's avatar

aug;
if it’s a sore that doesn’t heal, see a dermatologist.

jessturtle23's avatar

You guys are funny.

augustlan's avatar

Judy: If she ever starts doing it to me, I will certainly remember that!

It makes one wonder what kind of response the person was looking for. We told him/her that it wasn’t a ghost. They disagreed. We explained again that it really wasn’t a ghost. They disagreed again.

If you don’t want a logical response, don’t ask.

Also, I have spent a lot of time working with cadaver dogs. There are no such things as ghosts, however there are a lot of smells that you as a primate can’t smell. Tape a doggie treat to the ceiling, betcha she does the same thing.

tiggersmom's avatar

It is most likely what you are thinking, catsw and dogs see something, and are great for picking up on them, I keeps cats around, not just because I love them, but because they are great for seeing the spirits in places. There is most likely something there that he is seeing, especially with a cold spot. Hope this helps.

loser's avatar

Sorry, there are ghosts. I’ve seen one and there’s a chance the dog did, too. It’s hard to say what was going through the dogs head without being able to ask him.

syz's avatar

If you hear hoof beats, don’t think zebras.

Dogs have more acute hearing: it could be a mouse, an electrical “whine”, rumbling in the pipes, any number of things.

The other possibility is epileptic seizure. Some seizures manifest as specific, bizarre behavior.

dynamicduo's avatar

It’s an animal, a squirrel or mouse or something scurrying around. It’s not a ghost, ghosts do not exist according to many scientific studies and analysis done.

Occam’s Razor, often summarized as all things being equal, the simplest solution is the best, applies in this situation where we are looking at a dog’s behavior of growling, staring up at, and chasing an unknown object in the ceiling. These behaviors are indicative of a dog hunting or tracking something, that’s for sure. The question is, is it a ghost, or is it a critter. A critter is the easiest answer, as there are lots of little animals who take shelter in the cold months, and houses often have holes where a mouse or squirrel can get in. As well, there are known solutions for getting rid of critters, such as setting traps and examining your house for entrance holes. Since ghosts have not been proven to exist by science, there’s no sure-fire “ghost-be-gone” spray or method to get rid of one, so I argue it would be more beneficial to look into solving the critter problem than to keep believing it is a ghost.

bodyhead's avatar

It’s probably a ghost. Or it could be Jesus come down to spy on you while you watch TV. Those pesky spirits just don’t know what rooms to stay out of. You should probably hang a sign politely asking the ghosts to only have tea parties outside.

tiggersmom's avatar

I really hope that you don’t listen to the people here who are trying to say that your pup is hearing animals, when a dog hears an animal, they have a totally different reaction. I have seen many spirits, as I am what is known as a knower, and I can tell you what happened, or who is there, or what they looked like, and stuff like that, I hate waking up out of anesthesia, because of what I see when waking up.
You can contact a spiritualist and have them come in and clean your house for you spiritually. They are usually very successful with this. Then your pup shouldn’t react like that after a cleaning. Hope this helps.

asmonet's avatar

@tiggersmom: With all due respect to your lifestyle and beliefs, you can’t possibly discredit an animal’s behavior in that way. You don’t know this dog, the owner quite frankly does not ‘know’ this dog. At best we observe our pets and their personalities but we know nothing of their gut reactions or thought processes. You could make an argument that you can see body language and facial expressions on an animal, but that doesn’t mean we’re interpreting them correctly. Like laughing at a funeral. It’s an inappropriate outward response to an internal problem. Someone who didn’t know humans might think that was pretty effing weird. Just like staring at a ceiling and running up a couch to investigate. Odd behavior, but unless the dog learns to speak and says, “I see spirits!” it’s a guess. The most rational explanation is a noise that’s inaudible to our ears.

Hell, my dog reacts differently to all different kinds of animals, sometimes it’s alertness, sometimes hysterical barking, and yes, occasionally, she just watches and tries to get close only to lose interest and come trotting back to me. It’s not that far fetched.

No one person here is going to agree or prove what the other is saying here. I am not debating this question, because that is what it is, some people believe and others don’t. You have good reasoning in your head, and I am glad to correspond about your beliefs as well. But there really isn’t anything to get heated up about here. Like I said, it is just a questoin. Sorry.

asmonet's avatar

I sincerely apologize if my tone came off as aggressive, that was not my intention. The comment you made just struck me as odd and I felt like sharing my thoughts. So, I am sorry, really. :)

Friends?

bodyhead's avatar

Seriously, if you want to get rid of those spirits, I sell magic beans. They only cost $100. The spirits hate them and if you can prove that they didn’t work, I’ll refund your money.

syz's avatar

Or you can get that freaky little lady from Poltergeist.

dynamicduo's avatar

I actually just completed an e-course on ghost hunting, I can do it through the internet, just point your computer at the spot and Paypal me $50, and I’ll say a chant that’ll solve your problems real quick. You gotta make sure you have your speakers on and the ghost can hear it though. Nevermind those beans, I bought a set of em and they didn’t even hit the ghost when I threw em at him. :)

tiggersmom's avatar

Yes of course asmonet, friends, I shouldn’t have jumped either, I won’t do that again. lol

For those of us who dedicate or personal time and effort to volunarily research reports of paranormal activity, this form of animal behavior is not that uncommon. We have numerous clients who own cats and dogs exhibiting behavior as discussed above. Further research and data analyses often reveal these cases are in fact perceived by members of our team as true hauntings. I would encourage everyone to conduct a little more research into this phenomena – especially if you are an animal lover.

Listen guys! dogs dont have a 6th sence! So I rule out the ghost/spirit/poltergeist ideas! Also of the house had rodents/insects etc Im sure their would be visual/vocal evidence! If possible I would like to add my theory… After monitoring my Rottweiler Kaizer( who displayed identical behaviours ) for days I worked out that my dog had what I call “Shadow Anxiety” if you look where your light shade is if it is dark then the shadow appears! Also if the tv is on the shadow flickers which gains the dogs attention resulting in the stare/growl. Behaviour! Also automatically you will tend to look for the “GHOST” lol so you get anxious and your dog WILL pick up on that increasing their anxiety (visious circle) if you ignore the dogs behaviour and distract the dog it will eventually stop caring and forget = happier K9! Dogs also have the same anxiety during the day with sunlight prisms which human eyes can’t pick up (dogs see everything in B&W)! Ultimatly though if you draw attention to the dog during it’s phase YOU are the problem! dogs are extremely inteligent and inherit our own behaviours! So this is a by-product of your actions! If your dog acts the way described distract and comfort it straight away NEVER EVER say “what is it boy/girl” and NEVER drawn in an look yourself!!! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! hope this works (pretty sure it will).....
