People of Los Angeles, WHAT IS UP with the honking in the 405 northbound tunnel before merging onto the 5 during rush hour?

Asked by Computergenius (258points) November 24th, 2008

Can someone please, please please explain to me why everyone honks when going through the 405 underpass just before you merge onto the 5 North? I mean, really, what is up with that? Why does everyone feel compelled to honk like an insane person when traffic is barely moving? And only in that underpass?

There is an urban legend that if you honk in tunnels they will collapse.

What? Why would you want to tunnel to collapse when you’re in it???

I don’t know but I use to live in Mobile where there are two tunnels and the whole time you are driving through people are honking so I asked around and that was the general answer.

My dad used to honk the horn once before we went into the tunnel and once when we left, just to hear the different sound it makes. That’s what you do for entertainment when you grow up poor.

Judi – we used to do that too and still do sometimes when we pass through a tunnel here in Louisville.

We honk or scream during the duration of our trip through the tunnel. No idea why we do this, but it is good for a cheap giggle.

My dad used to honk when going through any tunnel. It’s especially fun in the tunnels on Topanga Canyon. He always said it was good luck, but I think he did it just to amuse my sister and I.

Long live the honkers! I always honk in tunnels and am always disappointed when on nobody honks back. I drove to Eugene and back today and honked going through the tunnel both ways. Nobody played. party poopers

When I was in Egypt they said children learned to honk before they learned to talk. Every honk had a different meaning. It was it’s own language.

Growing up near the mountains around Denver, I don’t think I ever heard someone honk their horn before going through those tunnels. Learn something new every day.
